It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lucio Bruno Sacchetti, West Vancouver resident, on August 22, 2021, while riding his bicycle around Stanley Park, a place he frequented and loved dearly. His presence, advice, worldly insights, and tireless work will be greatly missed by his family, as well as numerous friends and colleagues all over the world. He was a loving father and grandfather.
Lucio just celebrated his 76th birthday. He was born in Castelli (Teramo), Abruzzo, Italy on July 19, 1945, to Marino Sacchetti and Doralice DiGabriele Sacchetti and grew up in Belgium and Italy. Upon completion of his studies in Italy and as a young man speaking almost no English, Lucio emigrated to Thunder Bay in 1966 as the last member of his family to do so. Soon after he started a family of his own – his four children are: Luca Sacchetti, Matilde Christensen, Tania Sacchetti, and Sonia Munn.
In those same years, he began working for the highly respected, agriculture-based engineering company, CD Howe, where he distinguished himself and soon worked his way into managing some of the largest projects on the company roster and around the world. In 1981, he moved his family to the west coast to oversee the design and construction of an innovative grain terminal in Prince Rupert, recognized then for being ahead of its time in terms of design, technology, and production. In 1991, with four partners, he founded his own multi-disciplinary consulting engineering company, CMC Engineering. Since then, CMC has been recognized for progressive and value-added conceptual design and engineering in the agri-food sector featuring innovative logistics and automation solutions, in domestic and international projects.
Whether it was the agri-food engineering community or business community at large, Lucio was known as a benefactor, a visionary, a generous mentor, and an innovative thinker. He was also an important member of the local and national Italian Canadian community. He served as the president of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada West and was a founding member and chair of ARPICO (Associazione di Ricercatori e Professionisti Italiani nel Canada Occidentale), a non-profit, volunteer-based society that advocates and promotes public awareness of science, innovation and research activities involving Italian researchers and professionals. He received several honours and awards from the Italian Republic; the most noteworthy about which he and his family were extremely proud, the Italian order of merit, "Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana" in 2017.
Lucio lived large, took risks, and embraced life. He will be remembered for his designs and progressive ideas. His unwavering devotion to lifelong learning and his generosity of mind and spirit will never be forgotten either. He will be remembered for his stories about his many travels around the world, but also for the serenity he found at his place in Point Roberts, Washington. He loved deeply and was deeply loved in return by all who knew him especially his family in Vancouver, Thunder Bay, Italy, and Belgium. He will be dearly missed.
A Go Fund Me campaign has been started by the family to install a bench on the Stanley Park seawall in Lucio’s name. Please follow the link for more information.
