It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Marjorie May Gordon (nee Hitt) on July 11, 2025 at the age of 91. For the last five and a half years of her life she accepted with humility and grace her physical limitations, the result of a severe stroke she suffered in late 2019.
Born on June 30, 1934 in the town of Armstrong, BC. She grew up on the family farm along with her parents, Fred and Nora Hitt, and her only sibling, Raymond Hitt.
During her childhood, apart from going to school, she helped the family by picking fruit (raspberries, strawberries, cherries, and plums) and also asparagus, among other tasks. Marjorie, or Midge as she was more commonly known, graduated from Armstrong High School in 1952 and was married a year later. Moving with her new husband Richard (who went by the name Dick) they started their married life in Vancouver. Their family grew with the birth of son Darcy in April, 1954. While he was still a toddler the family moved to Surrey. In the years that followed three more children were added to their family, namely son Reg in Nov. 1956, son Rae in April 1958, and daughter Dixie in Jan. 1961. In October, 1963 the family moved to North Vancouver where Midge continued to live for the remainder of her life. Midge was very comfortable living in North Vancouver where she looked after the home and was devoted to both Dick and all of the children.
In her free time her hobbies included baking, crossword puzzles, producing astrological charts, painting outdoor scenes using oil paints, tending her beautiful flower gardens, having coffee dates with friends and neighbours, keeping up with extended family via correspondence, and helping people with their health via Therapeutic Touch. She was once quoted as saying that the sole purpose for her life on this earth was to share love with others. Her kind and caring nature will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
She is predeceased by her loving husband Dick, their son Rae, and Midge's brother Raymond. She is survived by her sons Darcy, Reg (Angela), daughter Dixie, grandsons Jeff, Doug (Katie), Ken, and great grandchildren Gus, Iver, and Imogen.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC.
In lieu of flowers, to honour the memory of Midge and to continue her purpose of loving and caring for others, the family requests that an act of kindness be performed or given to someone in need.
Life Story for Rae Alastair Gordon
It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the sudden passing of Rae Alastair Gordon on February 28, 2025. Rae was born on April 21, 1958 at St. Mary's Hospital in New Westminster, BC to parents Richard and Marjorie Gordon who already had two sons, Darcy and Reg. The family was living in North Surrey at the time and it was there that Rae spent the first five years of his life.
In October, 1963 the family, which by then had grown by one more with the birth of daughter Dixie in January, 1961, moved to North Vancouver. Soon the time came for Rae to start school and so, following in the footsteps of his older brothers, he began to attend Lonsdale Elementary School. During his elementary school years, apart from going to school, Rae would join his brothers, sister Dixie, and the children in the neighbourhood in playing outdoor games such as tag, frozen tag, hide and go seek, kick the can, and red rover. As he grew older, into his teen years, he joined in with the neighbours children playing card games and board games such as Monopoly, Clue, Careers, Chess, Stock Ticker, and Pit. In addition he loved to play tabletop hockey, table tennis (ping pong), road hockey, and tennis. He was quite adept at construction and was instrumental in helping to build tree forts in the neighbour's (the Blanchard's) back yard (the portion that was not yet developed and still had wild trees growing on it). In the summertime Rae enjoyed swimming in either of the neighbours' outdoor swimming pools (either at the Riebel's house or at the Blanchard's house).
School seemed rather routine to Rae. That changed when, at junior high school, he became interested in "shop" courses, namely electricity, metalworking, woodworking, and drafting. He was interested in all of them but it seemed he was particularly fond of woodworking. He really seemed to have a knack for working with wood. In his later years he enjoyed and took pride in building bird houses. He referred to his bird houses as apartments and when new chickadees arrived he referred to them as new tenants.
After graduating from high school Rae entered the workforce, working for several companies during his adult life. These include the Geo. H. Hewitt Co. Ltd. (specialists in rubber stamps, etc.), Trident Key Mart (in Oakridge Centre), and Modern Home Furnishings in North Vancouver. The element common to each of these jobs was customer service. He applied himself to making sure the customers received what they were looking for and that their needs were being met.
Over the course of his life Rae helped various members of the family. In the mid 1980's Rae spent around 6 weeks living with and caring for his Uncle Erle in Nanaimo. For many years he lived with his Uncle Ray on the family farm in Armstrong, helping Uncle Ray take care of the house and the farm as he was getting on in years. At times he would come home to visit Mom. At the last stage of his life he spent 5 1/2 years living with and caring for Mom after her stroke in late 2019. Rae was also always available to help his neighbours, especially during the winter when the snow would arrive. At those times he would tirelessly clear the neighbours' sidewalks and parking spaces on the street of whatever snow had fallen. Sadly, Rae died unexpectedly after a brief but serious illness. He is missed by many whose lives he touched.
