It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Clayton Thorburn.
Known as Clay to all, he was a loving husband to Patti; wife for 39 years of marriage and together for 45 years. A devoted father to his three boys Brett (daughter-in-law Maria-Ashley Karaliolios),Gregory (partner Mathilde Benoît-Fortier), Wade (daughter-in-law Chantal Thorburn), Shelley Middleton (sister) and niece and nephews Amy, David and Shaun, whose lives were forever shaped by his kindness, creativity, and steady presence. Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, he carried a deep appreciation for the beauty of the West Coast throughout his life.
By trade, he was a welder, skilled, precise, and hardworking. But, his talents extended far beyond his profession. He was a gifted artist with a keen eye and a creative spirit, always finding ways to make and build with his hands. Whether working with metal or expressing himself through art, he took great pride in creating things that would last.
He embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He loved the thrill of skiing, and the challenge of a good round of golf. Clay especially loved cheering for and supporting his sons in their many sporting events. We certainly can’t forget his deep love for the family cats, Jasper and Kona.
Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his wife, his soul mate. Family trips were especially dear to him, with Italy and the south of France holding a special place in his heart; places where his love of culture, food, and togetherness came alive.
He will be remembered for his warmth, his creativity, his adventurous spirit, and his deep love for his family.
