Ruth Logan (née Wallner) of North Vancouver BC died after a brief illness on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
She was born June 15, 1929, to parents Minnie and Nels Wallner, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
Raised during the Great Depression and the Second World War, Ruth learned about sacrifice, responsibility, and community. These traits helped guide her through rest of her life.
Ruth graduated from Swift Current Collegiate in 1947 and went on to secretarial college. While studying, she met a handsome young man named John Logan, from Portage La Prairie, who was working at the local department while he studied to become an x-ray technician. That romance blossomed and the two were married in Swift Current in 1951.
They moved to Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) where their first child, Catherine, was born. Next the small family travelled across Canada to settle in Vancouver and then North Vancouver. Two more children were born on the west coast, James and Patricia.
North Vancouver was where they decided to put firm roots down and Ruth and John bought their first house. It was there they raised their family, where John retired and where Ruth lived until her final days in 2025.
Ruth took to family life and making her home a welcoming place. Family dinners were a constant. Volunteering at her children’s schools and attending all their events was a given. Guests were welcomed warmly and generously; if their favourite drink or snack was not on hand at first meeting, it was certain to be available the next time they visited!
For many years, the Logan family were a sailing family, first on “Wild Swan”, then later on “Navicular”. Weekend and summer trips took them all over the coastal waters of BC and Washington state, often in the company of the McGie or Van Halm family. John usually manned the helm but it was Ruth who acted as safety officer, ship’s cook, quartermaster, and commander of the young crew members.
Ruth also treasured her adult friendships. She joined a ladies’ bowling league in 1971 and made fast friends with the ladies there. She maintained those friendships for many years, even after the bowling alley closed! Lunches with the ladies even continued during the pandemic; they took their own picnic lunches and lawn chairs, and sat safely distanced at the local park.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband John, brother Tony and sister Irene. She is survived by her sister Donna Jones; her children Cathy (Glen), Jim (Denise) and Patricia (Chris); grand-children Gail (Brendon), Colleen (Matt) and Thomas; great-grandchild Dylan and many nieces and nephews.
At Ruth’s request, no memorial service will be held. She will be interred at the North Vancouver Municipal Cemetery, beside her husband and near her father.
Ruth supported many charities through her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
