TUSCALOOSA – George William Smith, age 97, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., died August 3, 2018, at his residence. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Sunset Funeral Home with Jim Ryan and Rev. Malcolm Frase officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years; Mrs. Jean Smith; brothers, Samuel T. Smith and John Earl Smith; sister, Mrs. Willie Mae Robertson; parents, John O. and Lilly Smith; and daughter-in-law, Teri.
Survivors include his sons, Phillip Michael Smith and Gregory Stephen Smith (Mary); sister, Mrs. Ola Lee Wyres, all of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; grandchild, Mrs. Amy Niven (Steven) of Northport, Ala.; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Danielle Falls of Northport, Ala. and Brandon Issac Falls (Danielle) of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy from January 10, 1942 until October 22, 1945. He was on the USS Idaho.
Mr. Smith married the love of his life, Jean, on November 22, 1945. He retired from BF Goodrich on August 1, 1981.
Pallbearers will be Steven Niven, Brandon Falls, Eddie Robertson, Ronnie Hamner, Brian Hamner and Newell Wyres.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Mt. Paran Baptist Church and the Yellow Creek community.
