A visitation for Darlene will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 pm. A private burial will conclude the services and will be held for immediate family only.
Darlene was born in Jackson, Mississippi, to Marie Miller and the late James Layton. She later made her home in Tuscaloosa, where she built a life centered on love, hard work, and family.
She spent many dedicated years working at the Rite Aid Distribution Center on Rice Mine Road, where she was known for her strong work ethic and commitment. Outside of work, Darlene found her greatest joy in caring for others. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, taking trips to the beach, bowling in the league at Leland Lanes, and making sure everyone around her had what they needed. Her nurturing spirit earned her the cherished title of “Momma D” to all who knew her.
Above all, Darlene shared a deep and devoted love with her husband, Michael Copen Jr. He was her soulmate, her forever best friend, and her constant source of strength and laughter. Their bond was one of unconditional love, partnership, and unwavering support.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Layton; her brother, Dennis Layton; and her grandparents, J. Lee Kinney and Etta Kinney.
Darlene is survived by her loving husband, Michael Copen Jr.; her children, Jennifer Johnson (Justin), Kristy Herring (Daniel), Ricky Evans, Kevin Evans (Kerry), and Michael Copen III; her mother, Marie Miller; her sisters, Deborah McDonald and Bridget Clark; her brothers, Gary Layton and Jeff Miller; and her beloved grandchildren, Deanna Mathews (Hunter), Breanna Terrell (Jacob), Brady Nabors, Briley Johnson (Jessica), Kennady Baldwin, Lee Evans, Braylon Evans, Ashton Johnson, Waylen Mathews, Kolton Terrell, Nevaeh Johnson, Aubrey Johnson, and Stetson Mathews; along with many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of West Alabama and all of the compassionate staff for the exceptional care, comfort, and kindness shown to Darlene and her family.
Darlene’s legacy of love, generosity, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She was more than a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was family to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
