

Mary Cowgill, age 70, of Northport, died July 3, 2010, at UAB Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at University Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Boykin officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
She was preceded in death by her husband George William Cowgill and her parents Edward and Velma Dickson.
She is survived by her sons, Steven George Cowgill (Jennifer) and Michael Edward Cowgill; sisters, Janet Aguilar and Ann Dickson; and grandchildren, Jack William Cowgill and Elizabeth Grace Cowgill.
Mary was born in Hialeah, Fla. A graduate of Florida State University, she became a teacher, eventually working in Taiwan, where she met Air Force pilot George Cowgill in 1969. They married and later had sons Steven and Michael. Mrs. Cowgill taught for many years in Peachtree City, Ga., and then worked as a guidance counselor. Even after retirement, she volunteered her skills in St. Augustine, Fla. In 2008, the Cowgills moved to Northport to be near Steven’s family. She will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to University Lutheran Church or the Charity of one’s choice.
