

She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on December 5, 1940. Mavis graduated from Tuscaloosa High in 1958 and married the love of her life Barney Bill Hughes in July 1958, becoming a loving mother to four children. After the youngest started school, she started her professional career at The Tuscaloosa County Courthouse working in the Tag and Tax Assessors Office where she retired after 25 years of service. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling around the world with her travel club's and family. She was a long-time member of Five Points Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir for over 50 years. She was best known as "Nana." She loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them baking, playing games, going on many trips, attending ballgames, shopping, and always eager to craft or garden. She looked forward to attending all family gatherings and always made sure to get plenty of pictures throughout the years. She went above and beyond to be there for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren daily.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Barney Bill Hughes, Sr.; son, Barney Bill Hughes, Jr. "Billy"; parents, Erin House and Orman Lee; In-laws, Elbert and Lila Hughes; brother and sisters-in-law, Jack and Octavia Howell, Tommy and Linda Hughes, Eugene Hughes, and Eileen Hughes.
Mavis is survived by her daughters, Melinda Billings (Terry) and Vickey Phillips (Walter); son, Darrel Hughes (Sara); daughter-in-law, Annette Hughes (Billy); grandchildren: Jason (Amber), Matt (Lauren), Kyle (Becca) Billings, Krista (Brad) Johnson, Julia (Erik) Roberts, Jed (Jessie) and Bryan Hughes, and Misty Hughes; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Isabella, Lila, Eleanor, Lincoln, Ella Rose, Mary Frances, Liam and Lorelei Billings, Madilyn Grace and Crawford Johnson, Olivia Peffer, Noah and Jon Roberts, McKenzie and Grayson Hughes; brothers, Orman Lee House, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Ann Brown Caples (Ron), Mary Ruth Butler (Bobby), and Judy Hughes; brother-in-law, Jimmy Hughes; special pets, Roxie, Lulu, and Bootsie, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Mavis will be held Monday, February 24, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Five Points Baptist Church followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM with Bro. Terry Billings officiating. Burial will take place at Memory Hill Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers are Jason Billings, Matt Billings, Kyle Billings, Jed Hughes, Bryan Hughes, Brad Johnson, Erik Roberts, and Greg Howell.
Honorary Pallbearers are members of Five Points Baptist Church, Grace Sunday School Class, Tuscaloosa County Courthouse, Jimmy and Lanetta Crowe, Cheryl Tucker, Dee Dockery, special caregivers, Latonya, Pam, Janet, and Donna, Hospice of West Alabama, employees of Hughes and Mullenix, and Travel Club's.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or your favorite charity.
