Sergio Urrutia Olivera was a man for whom actions would speak louder than words. The qualities of being fair, just and the ability to recognize what was right were clearly driving forces in Sergio's life. Sergio was modest in his actions and extremely literal in his thoughts and in the manner in which he communicated with others. When Sergio said something, he meant it. All those who knew him appreciated this trademark quality. To his family, he was known as "Checo", to his friends, he was affectionately nicknamed "Serge" or "Teddy".
Sergio was born on January 6, 1985, at Northridge Hospital in Northridge, CA to parents Damaso and Amanda Olivera. Sergio was raised in Canoga Park, CA. As “Checo” grew older, he realized the importance of being treated fairly, and in return, he treated everyone around him the same way. This belief in fair play served Sergio well throughout his life and despite his natural shyness; he enjoyed a solid group of friends.
Sergio has two younger sisters, Amanda and Emily, and four older half-siblings, Damaso, Trinidad, Oscar, and Baudelia. Sergio and his siblings got along exceptionally well, they shared many life experiences. In fact, the beautiful relationship he shared with his sisters extended to both of his nieces, Cynthia and Melissa Vasquez, who looked up to their uncle as a father figure, and he gladly took on that role.
During his childhood, family, and friends viewed Sergio as a quiet and pleasant person with what most would consider a calm and tranquil demeanor. A great deal of Sergio's free time was spent learning how and why the things around him worked. In his spare time, he liked playing pogs, video games, and soccer.
The fact that he was curious was an asset to Sergio while he was in school. Sergio enjoyed tackling the project that was right in front of him and working it straight through to its conclusion. He graduated from Chatsworth High school in 2003. His favorite class in high school was history. “Serge” will be forever remembered in high school for selling burned CD’s at the best prices.
Those who didn’t know Sergio might have thought him to be objective and somewhat emotionally detached, but family and friends who were close to him knew that he was capable of unexpected flashes of humor. Sergio's good friends tended to be “thinkers” like himself, it was a strong and loyal group, and Sergio liked nothing better than to spend his free time with them. While growing up, some of his best friends were Erick, Alex, Marco, and his cousin Erik. Later in life, he became friends with Brian, Paul, Mike, Gabe, and Fed.
On July 26, 2013, Sergio exchanged wedding vows with long time girlfriend Alondra Casaretto. She had fallen in love with Sergio's sweet personality, bad boy look, and his Chevy Impala. In time, Sergio and Alondra decided to part ways, however, they always remained good friends and confidants.
In 2017, Sergio met Arleth Flores while working at AT&T, it was love at first sight, they were inseparable and within a short time into their relationship, they were expecting their first child. On May 6th 2018, Sergio was blessed with his only child, a son, Giovanni Eleazar Flores Olivera. He cherished spending time with “Gio“, who coincidentally shared the same interests as him, from playing with hot wheels cars to learning about all types of animals. His son instantly made his life complete.
In his work life, being able to grasp the logical components of any task was significant to him in appreciating its importance. His primary occupation was store manager. He was employed for 18 years in retail, beginning at Footlocker, then Crocs, AT&T and Spectrum. This was after briefly working a paper route with his cousin Erik and his employment at Jons Market. Sergio always made the effort to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.
Sergio's curious and inquisitive nature influenced his choice of leisure pursuits as well. He particularly enjoyed the “alone” time his hobbies provided. His favorite pursuits were working out, until he suffered a back injury, listening to or watching podcasts, and riding his motorcycle with his GoPro. Sergio was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.
Sergio was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite events whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list were soccer, watching the Chivas with his dad, and Football, his favorite team being the 49ers.
Sergio Urrutia Olivera, age 38, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, in Northridge, CA. He is survived by his only son, Giovanni Eleazar Flores Olivera. Services were held at Bastian and Perrott, Oswald Mortuary. Sergio was laid to rest in Oakwood Memorial Park and Cemetery in Chatsworth, CA.
Sergio strongly believed that talk is cheap. He was the type of person who would show others his feelings through his actions. He was practical and realistic but was able to be flexible when the need arose. The experiences he treasured most were those he shared with his loved ones. Sergio Urrutia Olivera will be greatly missed.
