Donald was born in Norwich on October 26, 1925, the son of Robert E. and Minnie Fowler. He was the last surviving member of that immediate family.
Donald was a WWII veteran of the Merchant Marine. He was married 60 years to the love of his life, Margaret Murphy, who predeceased him.
Donald was a 55 year member of LIUNA Local 547, and worked on many construction jobs in the area over his career, including portions of I-95 in Connecticut and Rhode Island, area schools and colleges, Millstone I & II, the Coast guard Academy, and military housing, among a few. He loved the water and boats. By the time he entered school, he was an adroit handler of the boat built for him by his father, using it for fishing and crabbing the area waterways and the Thames. He enjoyed animal husbandry, his garden, wood-carving and his home.
Until infirmities set in, he was an active and hard-working man who did not ever believe he couldn’t tackle and accomplish anything he set his mind on, and being proved correct. He was wholly devoted to his family, who will greatly miss him.
He is survived by sons, Donald R. and Timothy, daughter-in-law Sherrie, and daughters Kathleen and Maureen; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He made time for his grandchildren and loved them dearly, proud of their accomplishments. He loved God and was generous and faithful in all things. The family expresses its deepest appreciation to the staff of E4 at W. W. Backus Hospital for the expert care and kindness shown to our father and our entire family during his stay there. The family would also like to thank the Center for Hospice Care and the exceptional staff of Fairview for their compassionate and tender care in easing his end of life transition.
A Memorial Service will be held at Abundant Life – Assemblies of God Church, 85 Skinner Rd., Colchester, CT. on Saturday March 30th at 10:30am. There are no calling hours. Burial is private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Center of Hospice Care, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 0360.
