Husband, Father, Brother, and Friend
Douglas “Doug” Churchill passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty), his devoted wife of 53 years, and a house full of family and friends.
Born with a generous heart, Doug built a life rooted in love, kindness and community. He and Betty were married on November 20, 1971, and together raised a beautiful family that was always at the heart of their home.
Doug is survived by his wife Betty and his five children: Mary Loubier; Emily Churchill and partner Dave; Doug Churchill and partner Pat; Lori Holmgren and husband Bob; and Cindy Caya and husband Dave. He also leaves behind siblings Nancy Palmer, Dick Churchill, and Harry Churchill and several Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Ralph, Lamont, Harold, and Robert Churchill.
A lifelong resident of Connecticut, Doug was the proud co-founder of Charlie and Doug Auto Service in Norwich, which he opened in 1976 and ran with care and integrity until his retirement. He took great pride in maintaining what he fondly called his “back 40” — a lawn that would make many jealous. After retirement, he found joy on the golf course, forming a circle of cherished friends. Whether for his children, friends or for his town, he never missed a chance to lend a helping hand.
Doug was a volunteer with the Franklin Lions Club, he was a member of For Corvettes Only Club, he plowed snow for the town, he enjoyed woodworking, especially making birdhouses, and playing softball and skiing in his younger years.
He was the kind of neighbor who made everyone feel like family. He loved a home filled with laughter, plenty of food, and the sound of clinking glasses. From poolside picnics to barroom celebrations with Elvis and Patsy Cline playing on the juke box and holiday feasts around the dining room table, it was a warm and welcoming space for all.
He was a father figure not only to his children but to their friends, his niece & nephew, and many others whose lives he touched with kindness and quiet wisdom. A special neighbor and her son held a particularly dear place in his heart.
Doug’s memory will be toasted with a Fireball, just as he would’ve wanted — surrounded by laughter, stories, and the unbreakable bonds of family. We will never forget the “I love you’s” and kisses at the end of every phone call.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 21st from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Franklin CT Volunteer Fire Department, located at 5 Tyler Drive in Franklin, CT.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Franklin CT Volunteer Fire Department.
The family thanks the volunteers for their prompt response and compassion when needed. In addition, we thank all our family, friends and neighbors for their help along the way.
