Esther Bokoff, formerly of Norwich, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2021 at Brookdale Chatfield in West Hartford. Esther was born in New London on August 25, 1932 to the late Fanny (Sorkin) and Samuel Katz. Esther studied piano with their upstairs tenant, ECSO founder Victor Norman, and later at Boston University. She left college after two years to marry her love, Robert Bokoff, and helped operate their business, Boston Hardware in Uncasville.
Together Esther and Bob created a loving family life over 52 years of marriage. Raising three children, visiting with her parents until their deaths at 94 and 102, and adoring her grandchildren, family was always a focus for Esther. She added frequent trips to Ocean Beach, light bookkeeping, knitting beautiful sweaters, vacationing in Florida, playing canasta and baking traditional mandel bread, streudel and apple pie for special occasions. She was a member of Hadassah and Beth Jacob Synagogue.
Esther was predeceased by her husband Robert and by her older brother Leon. Among those left with treasured memories are son Steven Bokoff and his wife Cathy of Norwich, daughter Marilyn Brody and her husband Mitchell of West Hartford, daughter Barbara Pourfakhrai and her husband Habib of Southlake, Texas; grandchildren Jennifer Bokoff and her husband Chris Drane; Michael Bokoff, his wife Jillian and their daughter Sonia; Marc Brody and his fiancé Sarah Dowd; Rachel Brody; Samantha Brody Hart and her husband Curtis; Matthew Pourfakhrai, Hannah Pourfakhrai and sister-in-law Miriam Katz.
We are grateful for the compassionate support for Esther from her Norwich and Brookdale Chatfield caregivers, and from friends and family.
A graveside service will take place on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at noon at Norwich Hebrew Benevolent Association Cemetery #3 in Preston. All COVID guidelines will be followed.
Contributions in Esther’s memory may be made to Beth Jacob Synagogue, Norwich; Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of donor’s choice.
