

Howard Revell Clegg, 66, passed away at his home in Norwich on April 14, 2016. Loving son of the late Alice and Lawrence Clegg, O.D. Beloved brother and brother-in-law of Carolyn Clegg Hemman and Stephen Hemman of Westminster, MA and Nancy Clegg Tullsen (deceased) and J. Peter Tullsen of Elmhurst, IL; cherished uncle to Barbara Tullsen Hill and Dan Hill, John Tullsen and Evan Siegel, Jeffrey and Rachel Hemman, Suzanne Hemman York and Jeffrey York; a “great” great uncle to Wesley and Alaina Hill, Jacqueline, Nathaniel and Maxwell Hemman, and Lily Lynn York; longtime friend to Ray Coggeshall, Joe Troniar, and John Mulcahy.
Howard was born and raised in Norwich. He graduated from high school at Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA. After attending Nichols College, Dudley, MA, he served in the 101st Airborne Unit of the U.S. Army. He spent three years in the Army, including a year in Vietnam where he served bravely and patriotically. He was Honorably Discharged in 1976. Subsequently, he graduated from California State University, Long Beach, CA with a degree in Criminal Justice. In 1983, Howard began his career in the CT Department of Corrections at the Whalley Avenue Jail. He was assigned to the J.B. Gates Unit, the New Haven Community Services, and the Waterbury Community Services in the CT Corrections Department. He was promoted to Counselor Supervisor and served as District Coordinator for all halfway houses in the New Haven area. From 1999 to 2002, he worked for the District Warden’s Office as part of an investigative team. In this position, he was known for his excellent writing skills. Howard retired from the Department in 2003 after 20 years of outstanding service.
Among Howard’s interests were photography, reading, listening to music, doing N.Y. Times crossword puzzles, road trips, keeping current with politics and the news, cheering on the UConn basketball teams, collecting carved sculptures, and spending time at Onawa Lake, ME. He was a member of Central Baptist Church. He will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, his independence, his generosity, and his devotion to his parents and extended family.
A memorial service will be held at the Central Baptist Church in Norwich on June 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. An Honor Guard from the Connecticut Department of Corrections will be in attendance.
