Howard Marc Oberman, age 68 of Mystic, CT, passed away unexpectedly at home on December 14, 2025. Born on August 2, 1957, in Worcester, MA, Howie was the son of Jacob Oberman (deceased) and Libby (Simon) Oberman. A devoted husband, son, brother, uncle, and great uncle, Howie valued family, meaningful connections, and quiet moments far above attention or accolades.
Howie grew up in Norwich, CT where he attended John B. Stanton Elementary School and Kelly Junior High. He graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1975. Throughout his professional career, Howie worked in management and merchandising at local grocery businesses including Zablotsky’s Shop-Rite in Norwichtown; ShopRite in Norwich and Groton; BJ’s in Waterford; and prior to his recent retirement, at Walmart in Westerly, RI. He was respected for his integrity, understated character, and unwavering work ethic.
Anyone who knew Howie well would unquestionably attest to his lifelong love of sports, particularly as an avid fan of New York teams: the Yankees, Giants and Knicks. He was an especially fierce, proud supporter of the New York Yankees. With encyclopedic knowledge of Yankee history, team rosters and front office shenanigans gleaned over the years from WFAN sports personalities “Mike and the Mad Dog,” Howie looked forward to lively, often humorous debates with family members who rooted for the Boston Red Sox.
A true afficionado of authentic Italian cuisine, Howie enjoyed meatballs with pasta and greatly appreciated his wife, Betty, for her outstanding baking skills. He was quite fond of Betty’s famous carrot cake, grape nut pudding, and legendary chocolate chip cookies. Howie will be deeply missed by many and remembered for his humbleness, humor, and thoughtfulness. To his family, he was a steady, encouraging and supportive presence, always willing to lend a helping hand.
Howie was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Oberman as well as his brother-in-law, Stephen Rosenfield. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty (Obertello) Oberman and their beloved Persian cats, Gizmo and Oreo of Mystic, CT; his mother, Libby (Simon) Oberman of Simsbury, CT; his sister, Cheryl (Oberman) Rosenfield of Bloomfield, CT; and his brother, David Oberman (partner of Dee Daniels) of Pawcatuck, CT. He also leaves behind a niece, Andrea (Rosenfield) Short (married to Tyler) and their son, Parker Stephen Short of Simsbury, CT; a nephew, Eric Rosenfield of Bloomfield, CT; and an uncle, Eddie Simon (married to Millie) of Quaker Hill, CT.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Norwich Hebrew Benevolent Association Cemetery #4, located at 62 Middle Road, Preston, CT 06365. Immediately following the funeral, Howie’s family invites mourners
