

Bozrah- James “Jimmy” Lathrop Sr, 82, passed away on April 3, 2022, in Providence RI, with his family by his side. He was born October 28, 1939, in Norwich CT, and a lifelong resident of Bozrah CT. He was the son of Tyron and Mildred (Carter) Lathrop.
James is survived by his wife of 59 years Margaret (Gill) Lathrop, his children James Lathrop Jr and his wife Meme of Wakefield, RI and Pamela Lathrop and her husband Donald Chapelle of North Andover, MA, and his granddaughter Sarah Lathrop and her partner Ben Swan of Philadelphia, PA. He is also survived by his siblings; Richard, Tyron, Linwood, Donald, Evelyn, and Patricia and predeceased by his parents Tryron Sr. and Mildred and siblings, Muriel, David and Raymond.
James was known for his athletic ability and love of sports. He attended Norwich Free Academy, received the Freshman Award for Basketball, was a member of the State Champion Cross Country team, and elected to the NFA Sports Hall of Fame. James was a boxer and known for his prowess in the ring. He loved cars and racing and drag raced at the former Navy base in Charlestown RI, now known as Ninigret Park. He was involved in various youth sport organizations including serving as president of the Norwich Little League.
James founded Lathrop Disposal and operated the family business for over 25 years. Many people still remember the trucks with their logo “Here Comes Jimmy” on them.
James was a fisherman, a passion he passed down to his granddaughter, and loved going to local fairs, and watching horse and oxen pulls.
James spent his life working to provide opportunities for his family. He loved going to Maine with his wife, sitting at home watching cowboy movies or UCONN girls basketball and taking car rides to nowhere in particular but always ending with ice cream. He will be missed.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hope Health Hospice of Rhode Island for the exceptional and compassionate care they provided for James.
A funeral service will be held at the Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., in Norwich on Monday, April 11, 2022 at 7pm. Visitation will be held from 4pm until the time of the service. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
