Oakdale, CT
With deep sorrow the family of Laureen Wildowsky Costello announce her passing at home surrounded by family on December 23, 2020. Sweet Laurie was born in Norwich, CT on September 14, 1962 to William and Charlotte MacNeil Wildowsky who survive.
She also leaves three daughters to mourn her passing: Erin Butterfield (Justin) and Kelly Costello of Vermont, Morgan Costello of New Hampshire and long-time fiancé Jim Barber of East Lyme.
In addition she leaves her sister, Jeanette Svata, brother, BJ Wildowsky, 5 cherished grandchildren, Hadley, Willa, CJ, Lyla and Stella and former husband, Hugh (Chip) Costello of New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her sister Robin Miller, her nephew Drew May and grandparents.
After graduating Montville High School she attended Mohegan Community College and Southern CT State University. Laurie spent most of her adult life working in the hospitality industry. Until her courageous 4+ year battle with cancer began, she enjoyed almost 20 years at the Steak Loft in Mystic where she truly loved the camaraderie of her fellow workers and took great pleasure and pride in enhancing the special occasions of patrons.
She loved to reclaim and skillfully restore, refinish and reupholster old furniture. But, while enjoying many craft forms, her heart was in quilting. Over time, she lovingly fashioned and gifted a specially designed and crafted quilt to all those closest to her heart.
Cliché though it may be, to know Laurie was to love her. The essence of her compassionate and tender nature was evident in an exchange she recently had with her doctor. When told her time was short, that she was dying, she looked sympathetically at the doctor who had to deliver this devastating news and said, “You guys have such a hard job.”
Due to COVID 19 a memorial service will be held at a later date. Laurie wish was to have samples of her quilts displayed at her memorial service. If you are a recipient and willing to lend your quilt for Laurie’s service, please email: [email protected]. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Church and Allen Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
