Marilyn Pierson Carberry, 96, formerly of Norwich, Connecticut, wife of the late Thomas J. Carberry Jr., died on Thursday, November 14th at The Village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester, Virginia. Born in Norwich, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. Pierson Sr. and Elsie (Pearson) Pierson. Mrs. Carberry graduated from the Norwich Free Academy with the Class of 1946 and attended Upsala College. She was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Norwich.
Marilyn and Tom enjoyed an interesting life together and resided on Sholes Avenue with their two children. They spent over forty summers living at their cottage in the Stonington community of Lord’s Point, and after Tom’s retirement also enjoyed winter rentals in Port Charlotte, Florida. In Norwich, Marilyn treasured the company of a group of local ladies, the “Club”, through rotating house visits and lunches. The couple also loved to travel. Their destinations included Tom’s annual insurance conventions at locations around the United States, trips to visit relatives in Sweden, and trips to other European nations via ocean liner.
Marilyn and Tom moved to Covenant Village of Cromwell in 2000 where they made many new friends. Following Tom’s passing, in 2013, Marilyn relocated to Virginia to a residence at the Village at Orchard Ridge, where she remained spirited and independent during her nineties with the help of her dedicated assistant.
Marilyn is survived by her brother, Walter Pierson Jr. and his wife Sheila McPharlin of Westborough, Massachusetts. In addition, she leaves two sons and was very proud of their personal accomplishments in life and devotion to their families – Mark Carberry and his wife Kathy, of Acworth, Georgia, and Glenn Carberry and his wife Kimberly of Norwich, Connecticut; along with four grandchildren: Brian Carberry, Kristin Van Den Bosch, Christopher Carberry, and Caroline Carberry; and four great grandchildren.
