

NORWICH - Martha Fullwood Montgomery was born in 1915 in Homerville, Georgia to the late William Fullwood (Smith) and Donie Yencey. Martha is predeceased by her brothers Milford, Donald and William Dullman as well as her twin sister Mary Fullwood and Linnie Washington.
In 1932, Martha completed school in Homerville. In 1935, she married Walter Dallas Montgomery and gave birth to two daughters --LaForest Knowles & Lois Moore. They moved to Eustis, FL and then Orlando, FL in 1937.
In 1940, Martha moved her family to Norwich, CT. She once stated "Coming to Norwich in 1940 was good for us." Martha sought employment in domestic and factory work until 1959. She then received a position at the Norwich State Hospital where she retired after nearly 21 years. After one year of retirement she went to work for United Community Family Services, where she retired (again) after 12 years, and then as a Companion for an additional five years. Martha stated that she "enjoyed working and liked all of her jobs."
Martha was extremely active in her community. She congregated at Union Baptist Church for over 70 years. She was also a member of The Household of Ruth, The NAACP, The Martin Luther King Jr. Center, Senior Resources as well as, the Captain of her Neighborhood Watch group in East Great plains.
On May 25, 2015, Martha received a citation from Congressman Joe Courtney congratulating her on her 100th birthday. On May 25, 2016, she received an official letter from First Lady, Michelle Obama on her remarkable milestone of 101 years of age.
Martha thanked the Lord every day for letting her live to impact the lives of her 2 daughters, 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 35.5 great-great grandchildren, as well as a kaleidoscope of extended family & friends from Black Rose City. The Montgomery lineage sends their sincerest gratitude. God Bless.
Services will be held on Monday, April 10th at Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, CT. Calling hours 9-11a.m. Service at ll a.m. followed by a funeral procession to Maplewood Cemetery.
