

She was born in New York City on Nov. 29, 1921 to the late Mathias and Hermina (Jacobowitz) Fischer. She married her beloved husband, Leo Winakor on Sept. 3, 1939 in Salem, CT. Thereafter, Sylvia and Salem became synonymous as she raised her family, made her home, and worked for the town throughout her life.
Sylvia was a lady in the truest sense. She was the Town Clerk for over 23 years in Salem, served the town as Treasurer, Secretary of the School Board, was a Justice of the Peace, held past office in the Salem Grange, and was active with the Salem Senior Center. She was active with the Jewish Federation and regularly would treat herself to playing Bingo.
She leaves her sons; Dr. Eugene (Kay) Winakor of FL and MA, Art (Arlene) Winakor of Salem, and daughter; Brenda Holmwood (and her pre-deceased husband Richard), of Salem, along with 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her friend and caregiver, Vasana “V” Vileno who was dedicated to Sylvia throughout her final years.
Besides her husband Leo, she is also predeceased by her sisters; Lil and Ruth, and a brother; Frank.
A Memorial Service will be held at Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, CT on Tuesday at 11am. Burial will immediately follow at the Jewish Fraternal Cemetery on Lois St., Norwich, CT. A Meal of Consolation will follow burial at the Oakdale Fire Dept., 444 Chapel Hill Rd., Oakdale, CT. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Brenda Holmwood, 510 Forsyth Rd., Salem CT on Tuesday, 4/14 from 6pm to 8pm and again on Wednesday, 4/15 from 10am to 6pm.
Donations in her memory may be made to; The Jewish Federation of Eastern CT, Salem/Gardner’s Lake Fire Dept, Oakdale Fire Dept., or the charity of the donor’s choice.
