
Dr. David R. Adams, D.D.S., a long-time resident of the Norwich area and a local dentist, died Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown after an extended illness. He was 72 years old.
He was born January 25, 1950, in New York City, the son of Dr. Roger Adams and Justine (Hockaday) Adams. After his family relocated to the Norwich area, he attended Norwich City Schools, graduating in the Norwich High School class of 1968.
David honorably served his country in the United States Army, being stationed in Germany, while also spending time in Russia, in the intelligence division. After his discharge from active duty, he remained with the Army Reserve with the 10th Mountain Division until 2010, retiring in the rank of Major.
He was united in marriage with Dawn Matts on July 16, 1977, and they shared 45 years together.
Following his discharge from active duty with the Army, David attended Colgate University, graduating in the class of 1977. He graduated from the State University at Buffalo School of Dentistry in 1982 and would operate his own practice in Norwich for 35 years. He served as a dentist for the New York State Veteran’s Home on Oxford for over 20 years, where he enjoyed listening to veterans tell their stories.
Dr. Adams also served on the Norwich City School Board for two terms, beginning in 1993, served as the Tax Assessor for the Town of Norwich for two terms, and was involved with local Boy Scouts of America organizations for several years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed playing war games, and would paint detailed figures for use in the games. He was a true animal lover and had many pet cats and dogs over the years.
Dr. Adams is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dawn Adams; their son, James (Nicole) Adams; his grandchildren, Zoe May and Elliot Merle Adams; his brothers, Paul Adams, John (Ann) Adams, and Steven (Barbara) Adams; his brother- and sister-in-law, Merle (Betsy) Matts; his nieces, Rachel and Jenny Adams; and his nephews, Randy and Jamie Matts.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St., Norwich. A funeral service will immediately follow at 4 p.m.
