William J. Ahearn III, a long-time resident of the Preston-Norwich area, died Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich. He was 76. He was born November 10, 1945 in Queens, NY, the son of William Ahearn II and Madeline (Emrich) Ahearn. After spending his early life in New York City and on Long Island, he eventually relocated to Chenango County. William worked for many years on the kitchen staff of the Chenango County Corrections Department as a chef. He volunteered as a firefighter on Long Island before moving to the area, and also spent 42 years a volunteer firefighter for the Preston Fire Department, serving for many years as chief, a service of which he was most proud. He will be remembered as a loving uncle and a generous man, beloved my many in his community. William is survived by his nieces and nephews, Debra Caronia, John Lem, Eric Lem, and Michelle Spada; and his great-nieces and nephews, Dakota, Zachary, Marcus, Jessica, and Brianna. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Madeline Ahearn; his sister, Madeline Ahearn; and his nephew, Christopher Lem. Visitation will be held Monday, October 3, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St., Norwich. William will be laid to rest with his family in J.D. Lewis Cemetery, Preston at a later time.
