Elisabeth (Lib) lived in the same Chestnut Hill neighborhood where she was born, married and raised her three sons for 80 years. She loved to regale her family with tales of her childhood in what was then a rural area. She liked the fact that she was living next to a cow barn and yet was able to raise her family close to the city with its social and cultural opportunities. She attended the Chestnut Hill School, Beaver Country Day School, and The Master’s School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She loved to tell of her adventures in the neighborhood with her childhood friends and later on during European trips in the company of these same friends. With her family, she spent many summers at their home in West Harwich on the Herring River where she was an enthusiastic and able member of the crew of their Wianno Senior sloop, West Wind, which the family raced off Harwichport, as well a 38 foot sloop, the Nituna, which she, with her husband Larry, family, and friends frequently cruised from Cape Cod to Maine. Always an enthusiastic sports participant and fan, Elisabeth played golf and curled into her nineties. Music was a great love, and she faithfully attended Friday afternoon Boston Symphony concerts for over sixty years.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill, a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Chilton Club, the Vincent Club, and the Country Club, a volunteer with the Newton Visiting Nurse Association, and a member of the Ladies Committee of the Cotting School for many years.
Her husband Lawrence Barton Damon preceded her in death in 2001. She is survived by her three sons and their wives: John L. Damon II and Catherine (Buck) Damon of Barnstable, Lawrence B. Damon, Jr. (Renny) and his wife Dorothy (Macy) Damon of Wellesley, and Peter T. Damon and his wife Marcia (Newmaker) Damon of Dedham, eight grandchildren: Benjamin H. Damon, Marion (Molly) Damon Frederickson, Dorothy L. Damon (Lin), Lawrence B. Damon III (Nat), James G. Damon, Thomas M. Damon, Hallie T. Damon, Lydia S. Damon, and five great grandchildren: Elizabeth T. Damon, Macy G. Damon, Owen W. Damon, Oliver T. Damon, and Darciana L. Damon.
A service in celebration of her life will be held at the Church of the Redeemer, 379 Hammond St., Chestnut Hill, MA 02467 at 1:00 P.M., Saturday December 17, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Newton-Wellesley & Weston Visiting Nursing Association, 1589 Beacon St., Waban MA 02468, or the Cotting School, 453 Concord Ave., Lexington, MA 02421.
