

Dr. Eugene A.Doherty, 86, a longtime resident and physician of Norwood and Meredith, NH, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, Friday, January 30, 2015. Born on Christmas Day, 1928 in Boston, he was the son of the late Gerald and Doris (Taylor) Doherty. He graduated from Hopkinton High School. After graduating from Harvard College with the Class of ’52, Gene married the love of his life, his wife of 62+ years, Joan (Savage) Doherty. He served as an officer in the US Navy and saw action in Korea aboard the destroyer USS Stephen Potter (DD-538). He graduated New York Medical College in 1959, and practiced in Norwood for 30 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish and of the Massachusetts Medical Society. He was the kindest and gentlest man to all who met him. He enjoyed woodworking, skiing, tennis, golf, and, most of all, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Savage) Doherty of Norwood, the loving father of Paul Doherty of Boston, Christine and her husband, Stephen Oakley of Cambridge, Dr. Jayne Doherty and her husband, Dr. Christopher Molgaard of Lexington, Peter “PJ” Doherty and his wife Lynne, Marion and her husband Paul Bussiere, Amy and her husband, Lawrence Nee, all of Norwood and Elizabeth and her husband, Mark Baron of Centerport, NY; the cherished grandfather of Henrietta, Isaac, Kathleen, Andrew, Hannah, Seamus, Joseph, James, Jacqueline, Henry, Owen, Maeve and Gavin; the dear brother of Bernard Doherty of Harwich and the late John, Paul, and Gerald Doherty; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 5th, at 9:00 AM from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St., (Rt. 1A) NORWOOD, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 547 Washington St., Norwood. Interment will follow at Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 4th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
