John V. "Jack" McCarthy, of Norwood, passed away on Monday April 27, 2026 he was 96.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late George and Maryellen (Connolly) McCarthy. John was raised in Mattapan, attended local schools, and earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University. After serving a term with the United States Navy, John was the Manager for many years for the First National Store in Hyde Park, and later was Regional Sales Manager for the Cain's Mayonnaise Company.
John was the beloved husband of 58 years of the late Carol J. (Russell) McCarthy, the devoted father of Christopher McCarthy and his wife Claudia, and the proud grandfather of Caitlin McCarthy, all of Norwood. He was the brother of the late George McCarthy, Elizabeth Higginbottom, and Marie McCarthy. He is survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Jack had many interests. He dabbled in the stock market quite a bit and was thoroughly involved in politics for the Town of Norwood, serving as a town meeting member for several years.
He thoroughly enjoyed spending summers down on Cape Cod (Dennisport) where he would be quick to peruse antique stores, walk the beach at the crack of dawn, have a cup of coffee and read the paper on the deck in the morning and finish the evening with a game of Trivial Pursuit where bragging rights were always on the line.
Along with his wife, Carol, they got the chance to travel to many countries with Ireland, Switzerland, Germany and Austria among their favorites.
But nothing meant more to Jack than his family. He became the head of the household at a young age in Mattapan when his Dad passed away and his older brother struggled through serious health issues. He took care of the whole family. He later helped his sister Marie buy a home in Norwood so that she and their Mom could move there to be closer to him.
He was so excited when his son, Christopher, shared with him and Carol that he was marrying Claudia and even more excited when he found out he was going to be “Grandpa.” Caitlin was his world. Family meant everything.
