Rita M. Young Kern

Rita Marie (Young) Kern, age 87, of Norwood, Wednesday, September 25. The daughter of the late Arthur W. and Mary J. (Freier) Young and the beloved wife of the late Clement R. Kern, she was born in Boston on January 13, 1926. Rita was a saleswoman for Singer Sewing Machines and a skilled seamstress who taught adult education classes in Walpole and Norwood. She was active in the Friendly Service Group at the First Congregational Church in Norwood and had been active in the German-American Ladies Society (GALS) at the Boylston Schul-Verein in Walpole. She also worked for Gertrude’s Bakery in Norwood for several years and loved baking for her family and friends. She was the loving mother of Judith (married to Leo Lentini) of Foxborough, Jeanne (married to John Drummey) of Mansfield, Robert Kern of Norwood, and Ed Kern (married to Mary) of Wrentham; the dear sister of Frances Meredith of Westwood, Dorothy Tessicini of Milford, Robert Young of Carver, William Young of Lakeville and the late Arthur Young, Irene Hough, and Marion McClellan; the cherished grandmother of Kristen, Michelle, David, Aimee, Rachel and Sean, and great-grandmother of Nathan; and the aunt of several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, at 9:00 AM from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Rte. 1A), Norwood, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 547 Washington Street, Norwood. Interment will follow the Mass in Highland Cemetery, Norwood. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday, September 29, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
