GATES, ANTHONY M., passed away on December 27, 2015. Tony was the son of the late Frank and Martha Gajewski, and was affectionately known all his life as “Kubi”. He was pre-deceased by his wife E. Anne Gates, their beautiful dog “Ginger”, his sister Wanda Moreno and his brother Francis Gajewski. Kubi is survived by his loving sister, Dorothy Abremski, his nephew Kenneth Abremski and wife Mary Jeannette, his brother-in-law John Moreno, his nephew Daniel Moreno and wife Dorothy, and his nephew Richard Moreno and wife Denise. Kubi also had two great nieces, Selina Purisch and Jennifer Olson, and a great nephew John (Jas) Moreno, whom he loved very much.
As a young man, Kubi joined the Navy, and was a radio operator aboard ship. His interest in communications continued, and he enjoyed a long career with the FCC. Kubi was a proud graduate of the University of Baltimore. Kubi loved ham radios and many would know him by his call sign “N3GE”. Music was always an important part of Kubi’s life, both jazz and classical. In his retirement, he devoted time to learning to play classical piano. Electronics captivated him, and he loved everything from LP turntables to computers. Being a movie buff, he had as many old war movies as a Hollywood producer.
Kubi was a man who made friends for life. Two of his longest friends were Mr. John Allgeier and Mr. Richard “Otts” Jones. They shared a loving friendship since their teens, and continued to communicate until John passed in August 2015. Mr. Allgeier’s nephew Dennis continued to stay in contact, and in this way, the friendship never died. Kubi and “Otts” were in touch as late as last week. Their many years of loyal friendship are appreciated by the family. Kubi also made many friends at Harbour Square in Washington, DC, where he lived for many years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, 8030 Bradshaw MD 21087, and a visitation for family and friends will be held before Mass from 10 am until 11 am.
