Dr. Bernadette Stundick, 81, of Kingsville, MD died unexpectedly on May 3, 2022. Dr. Stundick was born on July 5, 1940 to Jesse V. Beres, an office manager in the Coke Ovens Department of the Bethlehem Steel Corp. and Marie K. Beres, a secretary at the U.S.F. & G. Corp., who later became a full time homemaker. Dr. Stundick graduated from the Catholic High School of Baltimore and the Peabody Preparatory of Music. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences from Notre Dame of Maryland University, a Master’s degree from Loyola University Maryland and a doctorate from Morgan University.
She married “her rock” and lifelong partner, Walter T. Stundick, shortly after their college graduations and resided in Kingsville, MD for more than 40 years. Bernadette and Walter had two sons, Brian Christopher born on May 18, 1972 and Walter Beres born on June 25, 1976. Dr. Stundick and her family loved to travel when the opportunity presented itself. They owned a motor home in which many summers were spent taking seven to eight week vacations traveling and exploring throughout the U.S. and Canada. Their travels took her, her husband, and two sons to many countries throughout the world as well.
Dr. Stundick was a teacher, science and health department head, assistant and unit principal in the Baltimore City Public Schools for more than thirty-three years. She was a unit principal at Lake Clifton High School as well as school treasurer and handled the entire school budget for many years. She also served as a science supervisor in the “Teach for America” program for ten years at Johns Hopkins University.
Upon her retirement, she taught as an Adjunct Professor at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and Loyola University Maryland. She then taught biological sciences at Towson University as an Adjunct Professor from 1998 to 2015. At the time that Dr. Stundick was promoted to Adjunct II Professor, Dr. David Vanko, Department Chairperson, complimented her on her high-performance level in the classroom which was recognized and appreciated. Her students always commented positively about the integration of hands-on activities and the ability to practice teach to their peers; her classes were always active and engaging. Dr. Stundick loved mentoring potential future teachers who were so enthusiastic and could make a difference in the lives of many students.
During her teaching career, Dr. Stundick was recognized and received many awards for her teaching: 1) semi-finalist as the Maryland Outstanding Biology Teacher, 2) semi-finalist twice in the Science Presidential awards, 3) received the Maryland Association of Science Teachers award for her “outstanding contribution to high school science education”, 4) received the public-school administrators and supervisors association “Distinguished and dedicated service” award, and finally 5) received the “Governor’s Salute to Excellence” from Governor Donald Schaefer.
In addition to her teaching career, Dr. Stundick was the owner and general manager of Comprehensive World Travel Agency located in a Johns Hopkins University Hospital building on Broadway St. in Baltimore for 20 years. As a result, she and her travel advisors planned conventions, conferences and personal travel plans for many Hopkins employees, doctors, and departments at Hopkins Hospital.
In 1997, she and her husband purchased a waterfront home in St. Michaels, Maryland. Since that time, it was one of her favorite places to be, especially during the summer. She loved entertaining family and friends, with whom she would play cards until the wee hours of the morning. During the day you would often find her gardening. In recent years, she was a dedicated and tireless caretaker for Walter, after he suffered a stroke in 2018 leaving him bedridden.
Dr. Stundick is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, her two sons, Brian and Walt, a daughter-in-law, Melissa Stundick, and four grandchildren Brice, Alexander, Taylor and Brady.
