White, Jr. (Sarah); the loving grandfather of Chandler A. White and Davis T. White; beloved uncle to G. Vernon White; stepfather to Cecily (Ces) Johnson, step-grandfather to Sasha (Eliand), and step-great grandfather to Saige; dear brother of Cole Wright (deceased), Anita Ashley (deceased), Michael F. White, Sr (Linda), David P. White, Sr. (Paula) and (deceased) Orion M. Phillips, Sr (Margo) and (deceased) Edmund White, Jr. (Shirley), and a devoted friend and family member to countless others.
Carmund Theodore White was born on May 15, 1938, in Buffalo, NY to Willie Nell Carter and Edmund White. His name derives from a combination of their two names: the beginning of his mother’s maiden name and the last part of his dad’s name. Carmund loved participating in the Boy Scouts and wrestling as a boy. He developed a passion for swimming and ultimately became a lifeguard after one day jumping in the deep end of a pool and needing to be rescued by the lifeguard. As a teenager, Carmund was also a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served on the junior usher board and briefly sang in one of the church choirs. He credited uncles for teaching him important values because they supported everything he did.
While attending Howard University, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He also met and later married another Howard student, Diana. Carmund joined the military and was stationed in Tachikawa, Japan. Tiffané was born, and they returned to the states two years later. He began his career as a civil servant with the National Security Agency. Forever committed to maintaining confidentiality about his governmental responsibilities, the only information he ever revealed about his position was that it was in “communications”. He remained with the NSA for 30 years.
A few years after returning to DC, he moved to an apartment near the National Arboretum where he loved to visit the bonsai garden, due to his affinity for Japanese culture. Years later he married Paulette, and they had a son that they named, Carmund, Jr. For many years, he served as the Scoutmaster for Troop 331 based at the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church With Scoutmaster colleagues Jeffrey Womble, and Timothy Ferrall, Carmund developed countless young men as Scouts, including his own son.He was also involved with the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and enjoyed going to movies with his friend Tim Ferrall. Carmund retired from the NSA in 1998.
Once Carmund moved from DC to Parkville, MD, as a newly married man, to Deborah Glover, he decided he also had to give up the red and gold of the Washington football team for the purple and black of the Baltimore Ravens. He was passionate about scheduling his annual Brother’s Week where he and his brothers would get together and talk and eat and shop. He loved his fraternity, and getting together with former colleagues from the NSA. He and Debbie enjoyed vacations, with a groups of close friends on New Year’s Eve, to their vacation property in Williamsburg, family gatherings and the birth of their grandsons, Chandler and Davis.
Carmund was a man of strong convictions. He was very opinionated, but he was willing to listen. If you presented a strong enough argument, he would compromise. If you knew him, you knew what you could and couldn’t, should or shouldn’t mention. However, when you spoke with him – you had his full attention. He loved watching the “Westerns” channel and he would even record them and watch them over and over. Carmund has a keen eye which developed into a love of photography. He snapped and catalogued over 10,000 pictures of family, friends, trips, and landscapes. His hobby led him to invest time and money in equipment.
Carmund loved food, (peas and rice were favorite) chocolate eclairs, popcorn, cold cereal, ice cream, pie, bread pudding and good food. He was also principled, friendly, had a big laugh and a dry wit, which was accompanied by a sly smile. He always advised taking time to smell the roses, leaving a place cleaner than you found it, and being grateful for your blessings.
