It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of the remarkable Catherine "Kitty" Stewart Sackett, on December 6th. She passed suddenly and peacefully with her husband and daughter holding her hands. Kitty was and is the treasured wife and dearest love of Michael Joseph Sackett; devoted mother, mentor, and best friend of Meghan Sackett Menon; loving and dedicated grandmother of Lorelei Ayra Menon and Esmée Aishwarya Menon; treasured mother-in-law of Pratish Menon, dear sister of the late Ann Joy Webb, Robert Joy, and Richard Joy; darling daughter of the late Alice O'Brien Joy Stewart, Also survived by loving nephews and nieces, beloved sisters-in-law, and a whole community of dear friends and patients whose lives she touched.
Kitty graduated from the second graduating class of Mercy High School and began her career as a teacher before finding her true calling as a nurse and later nurse practitioner at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was a published author in her field and was invited to give lectures and consult internationally, from Saudi Arabia, to France, to Japan and others. Over her extensive career she also touched the lives of thousands of patients from Baltimore and the surrounding environs, both through her work on AREDS and through her work with Medstar and the NIA on the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging. She was beloved by her coworkers and patients alike in each of these places and stages, forging bonds more akin to those of family than of colleagues. In every space she occupied she boldly spoke her mind, delivering advice to those who needed it (whether they knew it or not) and advocating for her patients and colleagues alike. In her home life her strength and loving everyday presence fostered the sort of environment in which her husband, daughter, and later son-in-law and granddaughters could thrive. A genuinely voracious reader, sha passed on to her family her love of history, of great authors, of mystery writers, and a propensity to ferret out the whimsy in any given situation. She doubtless would find it even in these preparations. Details of her upcoming visitation and service are below:
