George was born on November 16, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Jenny and Sol Cumberland. He attended Northern High School, and after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served as an infantryman in Vietnam in 1969, where he was awarded three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Immediately following his military service, George began a successful career in the elevator industry as an elevator constructor with General Elevator. He later worked at Haughton/Schindler Elevator, Vic’s Elevator (Ocean City), and retired from Admiral Elevator in 2006. He was a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 7 Baltimore. After retirement, George served as an elevator inspector for the Social Security Administration for seven years.
George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating, but what he treasured most was time spent with family and friends. Summers were particularly special as he and his family enjoyed vacations in Ocean City, Maryland. His participation in the White Marlin Open, where he once caught a 149 lb. tuna, was a highlight of his fishing excursions. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens and he attended many games over the years. Known for his expertise in the building trades, he was the go-to problem-solver for family and friends. He built his home in Kingsville in 1986, where he lived until his passing.
His son Kris reflected, “My dad always said his greatest achievement was his family. The love and life he shared with us will be his legacy as we move forward without him.”
George is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Pat Mottl Cumberland; his son Kris Cumberland and his wife Renee of Abingdon, daughter Molly Giannopoulos and her husband Lou of Kingsville; and daughter Kerri Murphy and her husband Matt of Bel Air; and his pride and joy, his six beloved grandchildren, Nicholas and Nathan Cumberland, Stacey and Iliana Giannopoulos, and Oliver and Nolan Murphy. He is also survived by his sister Carol Ann Hannan and her husband John; his brother David Cumberland and his wife Debbie; and several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his first wife of 18 years, Stacey Gillern Cumberland, who passed away in 1993, and his parents.
