We have so many memories of walking to "Marty's Park" beginning with my two oldest kids when they were little. It was the ritual to make our way to the back yard to check out the pond and play on the various swings hanging from the trees. They loved the tarzan swing made from bike handles the best. Marty usually came out and talked to us and shared the newest pond projects. He would direct the kids' attention to the different creatures living there and talk it up about the blue heron thief that would steal his fish. And of course he would go into the shed for the container of cheerios and let the kids feed the fish. Marty was always so kind and welcoming. That visit was a normal part of our family walks for years, even as our family grew from two to six kids. Marty was great at letting kids be kids and my little ones felt it was the highlight to journey to Marty's Park.

I also remembered the first time I met Marty's daughter. I have walked the neighborhood for years. Many days I would see two bodies hanging out from under a car. I used to think, "How awesome that he and his son have this hobby to share." I'll never forget the day I saw his daughter slide out from under the car! That memory brings tears to my eyes as I write. It is almost as dear as the picture of a very happy dad with his girl on her wedding day. Priceless!

Sherri, I love the story of when Marty first realized you were "the one." Although the time seems too short for you to have him here, I am blessed to have witnessed a very lovely marriage that has obviously been a part of a wonderful family legacy, one that has been woven together by the simplest and sweetest daily actions. You are a very fortunate woman. Hang in there!

First off, to avoid confusion, Martin Boegner was my father-in-law.  However, I call him Dad because he was like a father to me.  Like their father, Marty, Keith and Christi have no great love for public speaking and being the center of attention.  I can only hope to convey some of the feelings they have for Dad, and continue with their blessing I hope.

It is said that the man who wants nothing has everything.  Perhaps one of Dad's greatest traits was his simplicity.  He had no need for fancy things- the latest, greatest, or newest.  In fact he taught many of us that less complicated things work better, and when they stop working they're easier to fix.  Probably with duct tape.

He had no love of drama or gossip generally sticking to the old rule  "If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all."  Neither was he long winded.  When I asked for his only daughter's hand in marriage his response was "I'm cool with that."

If you wanted advice he'd give it.  If you didn't he never forced it upon you.  You could try things your own way.  If your way didn't work out he never gloated, but instead helped you dust yourself off and try again.

Dad found true love early and it never wavered.  He was a Coca-Cola man until the end.  But seriously if the church taught him to love God above all things, then Mom was a very close second.

He was never sappy but had a genuine joy in watching his children grow up, marry, and have children of their own…or grand-dogs.  He was never too grown up or stuffy to play with trains, skip stones on a pond, or let out a big burp to get a chuckle out of Bryanna, Bradley, Owen, or Ethan.

Dad loved music.  His ear had perfect pitch allowing him to tune his guitar in a flash and tell when the intonation was out.  While appreciating the complexity of guitarist Leo Kottke, Dad preferred to use his talents to play music by a much simpler group by comparison-The Beatles.  Playing with his brother Greg and the occasional friends and neighbors he'd often sing along.  Not with a classically trained voice or a perfect mimicry of Paul or John, but with that of the old folk and blues men.  Where you sang because you loved to sing and your heart was in it.  Not because you were great at it.  

For his father Joseph, brothers Joe, Greg, and Steve, sisters Jane, Karen, and Lisa, sons Marty and Keith, daughter Christi, grandchildren Bryanna, Bradley, Owen, and Ethan,  all the family and friends gathered today and especially his beloved wife Sherri, August 12th, 2010 was the day the music died.

Mart Boegner could fix anything.  I just wish he were here now to fix all of our broken hearts.

 What a guy! How lucky we all are to have had Mart as a part of our lives! Some of us have known him for 40 or 50 or 60 years, and I guess it sounds selfish, but it wasn’t enough. We don’t know why he’s gone now. Only God knows that and we look to Him to get us through this. 

  Mart was such an easy guy to be around. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life. With him, you could relax. There was something about him that made you feel he cared. He especially enjoyed his family and was so in love with Sherri. He told me a year or two ago that when he was a teenager he knew whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and it has worked out just the way he thought it would. He enjoyed being around his grandkids and liked to tell me stories about them, like the time Cathy corrected Owen for something and he said, “Don’t you have some asparagus to cook?”

 What are we going to do without him? We don’t know, but somehow we’ll manage, knowing a piece of us is missing. 

 God, please have mercy on Mart’s soul and help us through this. Please comfort Sherri and his family and let them feel your presence.

 Goodbye, Mart. Thanks for all the time we spent together. Thanks for playing guitar with me and teaching me all those Beatles tunes. Thanks for watching what Sherri and Diane called “those stupid cowboy movies” with me. Thanks, Mart, for being a great brother and thanks for being an even better friend.

Dear Sherri:
I viewed all the photographs and they made me smile and feel sad, too, that Marty is gone.  I still can't believe it.  When Tom and I moved on Overlea Avenue, Marty was a teenager.  Where did all the years go?  You have a beautiful family and Marty will be missed so much.  Whenever I/we needed help with car repairs, washing machine problems, whatever, the Boegner family was always there for me/us!  I am blessed to have had you all as friends although you all felt more like family.  I can see Ruth and her son together in heaven looking down to watch over, care for and love their family.  What a glorious reunion of Mother and Son.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.  God's blessings, peace and Love, Dorothy (Skarupa) Weidner

I just heard of your loss.  Jane and my thoughts and prayers are with you.  We did not communicate too often, but I always felt that Marty was one of the real good guys!

This is what I wrote to say at my Dad's service, although I shortened it a bit by removing the first quote:

I want to keep this short because my Dad wasn't one to talk for the sake of talking. I found a quote that best describes my Dad:

"Henry James once defined life as that predicament which precedes death, and certainly nobody owes you a debt of honor or gratitude for getting him into that predicament.  But a child does owe his father a debt, if Dad, having gotten him into this peck of trouble, takes off his coat and buckles down to the job of showing his son how best to crash through it."

The word "dependable" is defined as trustworthy and reliable. If I had to use a single word to describe my Dad, "dependable" would be that word. He was always the first help to arrive if we were in an accident, or when a car was broken down, or a water heater flooded the basement. And he was often the last to leave.

I'll finish with another appropriate quote:

"My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.” 

I love my Dad and I miss him dearly.

Sherri - you married a remarkable guy and his passing has got to be the most difficult of all the sadness you've been through.
