

Mary Smith, a devoted public servant and beloved family matriarch, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland on November 17, 2025. A daughter to Faye Qualls and James Thomas Qualls, she was preceded in death by her brother Tom Qualls. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, who adored her, mother to her son, the light of her life, Ryan Smith and his wife Brittany, best friend and granddaughter Kaylee, her brother Robert Qualls and wife Donna, Melanie Wolfe and husband Adam, nephews Robert and Jim Qualls, sister in laws Debbie Qualls and Sharon Scanlon and Roseanne Umstead, and nieces and nephews Steven Miles and wife Jessica, Scott Umstead, Jessica Beard and husband Andy. Loyal friend to so very many including her extended family in Arkansas, she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Mary dedicated over 45 years of service to the State of Maryland's Department of Juvenile Services. Her work made a lasting impact on countless lives and demonstrated her commitment to helping others.
While Mary loved the comforts of her Lutherville Timonium home, she cherished her annual trips to the West Coast, exploring Las Vegas, California, and Arizona. An avid fan of classic television, she found joy in watching sitcoms, particularly I Love Lucy and The Andy Griffith Show.
Mary was a true caregiver, welcoming her mother into her home to provide care later in life. A described "wine connoisseur," she also had a knack for online games, forming true-life friendships with her dedicated card crew.
Mary's memory will be cherished by her loving family and vast network of friends. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication, care, and a life well-lived.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd, Nottingham, MD 21236, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
