

On September 11, 2016 Dr. Richard J. Lauttman, D.D.S., Col., U.S. Army Dental Corps, Ret., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Sally B. Lauttman; devoted father of Janet Stinson (Bob), John Lauttman, Susan Lauttman, and Margaret Magno (Ray); dear brother of Robert Lauttman Sr. and Edward Lauttman Jr. (Mary Jane) and the late William T. Lauttman and SR. Dorothea Marie Lauttman, S.S.N.D.; brother-in-law of the late Pauline Lauttman; loving grandfather of Annabelle and Alexander; uncle of Robert Lauttman Jr., Donna Hall and Carol Bates; he is also survived by many other loving family and friends.
Richard was born October 22, 1931 in Baltimore, MD to Edward and Ann (King). In his early years he attended St. Andrew’s parochial school. He graduated from Loyola High in 1949. He graduated from Loyola College, Baltimore, MD in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1957 as a young dental student vacationing in Wildwood, NJ he met Sally Beck. They married on August 15, 1959. A year later daughter Janet was born. Along the way three more children were born to Richard and Sally, John (1962), Susan (1964) and Margaret (1967).
Richard earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland in 1960. He completed his intern training in Oral Surgery at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD in 1961. He started his 26 year career in the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 1961 where he rose to the rank of Colonel.
His army assignments included Fort Lee, VA (1961-63), Fort Wainwright, AK (1963-66), Fort Meade, MD (1966-68), Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. (1968-69), William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX (1969-71), 95th Evacuation Hospital at Da Nang, Vietnam (1971-72), Fort Riley, KS (1972-77), Landstuhl, West Germany (1977-80), Fort Dix, NJ (1980-83), Fort Bragg, NC (1983-87).
He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After his Army career he was an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in association with Doctors Mitcherling, Mitcherling, and Johnson in Baltimore, MD beginning in 1987.
He was Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland from 1988 to 1998. He was also an oral surgeon at Sterling Dental Center in Silver Spring, MD.
He was a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and member of the Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Middle Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, the Baltimore County Dental Association, and an Affiliate of the Baltimore City Dental Society.
He was a great admirer of H.L. Mencken, the “Sage of Baltimore, and was a member of the Mencken Society.
Relatives and friends may gather at the chapel at Oak Crest Retirement Community, 8800 Walther Blvd., Baltimore, MD, 21234, for a visitation on Friday, September 16, 2016, from 9-10 a.m., where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Interment Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
