Anthony Ambra, devoted husband to Barbara & loving father to his beautiful girls Victoria & Kristina. Known to many as Tony, loyal brother, uncle, cousin, brother in-law and friend. His kindness & compassion for his family & friends overflowed our lives. He made a difference in the lives of all who knew him. An avid hunter and sportsman, he loved the outdoors and the fair chase of wild game. Anthony was born at St. Francis hospital in San Francisco to Sebastian & Gloria Ambra in 1950. They moved to St. Mary's park in 1951 where Tony grew up and started many lifelong friendships. He always took pride in being self-sufficient and worked hard his whole life.
He attended St. John's elementary & Sacred Heart high school in San Francisco. Competed in team sports, starting with little league baseball. While playing catcher position he earned the nickname of yogi Ambra from his coach. After graduating high school he was sponsored by his employer because of his talents to become a Sheet Metal Apprentice with Local Union 104. After working on many large commercial projects in San Francisco including the Sutro Tower and new hospital projects, Tony was hired to work at the Dept. of Public Works. Tony took great pleasure in working with his hands to build & create to benefit the lives of others, including developing & building a castle for his family to grow in. He was instrumental in initiating the sheet metal shop with the SF Unified School District & soon achieved the title as Supervisor where he was recognized for his skill in managing people. At age 60 he retired from the City & County after over 35 years of Civil Service with Local Union 104.
Retirement meant that nearly all his time could be spent with his family & doing what he loved most "Duck Hunting," which he did at every opportunity. Tony's selfless dedication to The Six restored & enhanced the habitat essential to the prosperity of the duck club.
He is the strongest person we know. He is our hero. His legacy will live on in us, his girls. We carry his heart in our hearts always.
Tony is survived by his loving wife Barbara of Novato, Ca his treasured daughters Victoria & Kristina Ambra, Victoria's fiancé Parker Jones, brother Sebastian Ambra, sister in-law Joy, father-in law Cliff Porter, brother & sister in-law Cliff & Nancy Porter, niece Michele Fichera, nephew Clifford Porter & numerous relatives in California & the East Coast, they were such an important part of his life. Rest in paradise dearest Tony, we will miss you.
AVigil will be held at Keaton's Redwood Chapel of Marin in Novato, Ca on Monday 2/16/2015. Visitation is from 4pm-7pm. Rosary starts at 7pm.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Isabella's Catholic Church in Terra Linda, Ca on Tuesday 2/17/2015 at 11am .
Interment at Valley Memorial Park cemetery in Novato, Ca following the funeral mass. Services entrusted to Keaton’s Redwood Chapel of Marin.
