Charleston Hendrix proudly exchanged his earthly marching shoes for peace and justice to join the heavenly marching angels for eternal life when God recruited him on November 26, 2025. He was born on December 22, 1932 to Billy and Inez Hendrix in Center Point, Arkansas, Arkansas. As an adult Charleston, moved to Chicago Illinois to pursue a fuller life.
Charleston‘s move proved to be prosperous and rewarding. He met and later married the love of his life, Lillian Tate, on April 16, 1966. His joy and blessings were becoming the caring and committed father to Lillian’s three children-Horace, Larry, and Dorothy (known as Jean). His love for Lillian was admirable and deeply rooted. He maintained the life long commitment and held true to the saying “until death do us part” in their marriage.
Charleston joined Tabernacle missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Louis Rawls, located on the south side of Chicago. Charleston‘s employment history included working for many years at Conrail Railways. He was employed at the Chicago Sun-Times building at the time of his retirement.
Charleston’s favorite past time was hunting and fishing. He was extremely interested and involved in civil rights issues. Charleston was adamant about standing up and speaking out for justice and fairness of the underserved and injustices for all people. His passion, energy, and direct beliefs could be witnessed often when engaged in conversations surrounding political topics. He traveled to Washington DC several times to participate in various marches and in Chicago rallying for peace.
Charleston and Lillian relocated twice after retirement-first to Arkansas, then to Michigan, and finally, they returned to Chicago where they first met and fell in love, and to be closer to family. They shared many fond memories. Their love and long life together were a model for others. Holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions were always times to be remembered and celebrated.
You could often find Charleston and Lillian enjoying TV shows and movies together, listening to R&B music, making phone calls to family members, and watching music award shows. Thank God for their longevity-60 years of love and bliss, true eternal love.
Charleston’s family members who proceeded him in death were the love of his life, his wife, Lillian, mother Inez, father Billy, brother Billy Jack, sister Pamela, his son Derrick, grandson Andre, and his bonus son Larry.
Charleston leaves to cherish his memories, his son, Kevin, brother, Leon, sister-in-law, Rebecca, bonus children, Dorothy Jean (Mike) and Horace, 11 grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Charleston will truly be missed and remembered for his love of life and justice for all. He has achieved his mission to join and take care of his wife, Lillian.
