Grandpa,
It truly was an honor and a privilege to get to know you over these past 17 years.  Thanks for making me feel like one of the family.  After all you've been through so early in your life, your ability to build a family with Grandma and keep that family close for all these years was second to none.  For as long as I've know you, you've inspired me to be a better man and a better family man.  I always thought, “This guy has a good thing going.  That's what I want.”  So far so good.
I can honestly say that I can't remember a time when I would see you and wasn't greeted with a smile.  That's what I'll miss the most.  You'll forever be in my heart.  I love you and I'll miss you.

In memory of John Lahey, I would like to share some of my thoughts. First, I will miss him dearly. He never seemed to say a bad word about anyone. He always looked forward to seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to feed them popcorn. He was liked by everyone. If at a party, picnic or any function, if people saw him, they would go out of their way to at least shake his hand or kiss him on the cheek. I was a little envious of how he was so well liked. If I have half as many freinds as he had, I will be a lucky man.

Its hard to not be blue when one of the strongest men you know passes. But, I like to think that I am a better person for having my grandpa in my everyday life. When I was younger we shared mornings with Mister Rodger's Neighborhood and a whole mess of Fig Newtons, and Nilla Wafers. We also had each afternoon with a bag of popcorn and Wheel Of Fortune.  Every day he would learn me how to do stuff the right way.  I will miss going camping and trying to find the eagles in the sky with the biggest binoculars known to man. I could only hope that I could grow up to be half the man that my grandfather was. Not only was he my grandpa, but also a father and friend. For that he will be missed but not forgotten. I will always love him, with all my heart.

Gramps, it is hard to believe you have left us.  There are so many things I will miss with you being gone. Our weekly chats over pie and cookies about everything and nothing, your smile, the way you welcomed everyone with open arms, the wonderful way you treated the children and always had them laughing.  I will miss you waving to us as we leave and blowing us kisses.  I'm so lucky to have you as my Grandpa.  Please check in on us and watch over us. Heaven is very lucky to have such a funny, loving and brave angel on their side.  I love you more!

You were the first man I loved and that love continued to grow more each year.  You were and still are my hero.  You were my teacher.  You taught me to enjoy life and to try new things.  You taught me to appreciate the world around me and to respect and take care of it.  You taught me to look to heaven whenever I needed a little extra help.  You taught me that faith, family and friends are the most important things in life.  You taught me not to take life too seriously. You taught me to grin and bear it.  You taught me that there are things we can't change, so just accept them. You were the rock that this family was founded on. I will miss delivering the paper to your doorstep, watching you watch me as I was cutting the grass or shoveling the snow, watching Sox games together, going to mass on Saturdays, camping and so much more. I will miss you sitting in the window waiting for the little ones to come over, waving your gentle hellos and good-byes, smiling and blowing kisses.  My heart aches because you have gone, but I know we will see each other again someday.  Until then please keep an eye on all of us.  I know Maureen is tired of my asking for help and is glad that you have joined her to relieve some of the pressure.  Just know that I LOVE YOUR MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER LOVE ME.

About 11 years ago, shortly after our new Church opened, I began attending daily morning Mass.  I seemed to always sit in the pew behind John.  He was still able to walk back then on his own.  Without fail, after Communion I would open my eyes and on the seat of John's pew I'd see a photo of this beautiful young woman.  So one day, consumed with curiosity, I mustered up the courage after the Mass ended and introduced myself and asked John who the picture was of.  That's when John looked at me with those pure blue eyes of his and with utter serenity told me she was Maureen, your beautiful daughter who died so young of cancer.  I was so taken by his peace-filled smile as he gently said her name.  I knew I had just encountered a man of great faith-a faith that could reach beyond the immense pain of losing a child.  You and John, in your quiet, non-assuming ways of caring for each other has been a powerful source of inspiration for Wayne and me.  That's why I always welcome the chance to greet you at Mass.  I am convinced the impact of John's life-witness of faith continues to live on in a great number of people his life has touched.  Mary, my heart aches for you and your family at this time of such great sorrow.  May you all be embraced by the comfort of tender memories John's life has given you.  May you draw strength and comfort from the faith his very life stood for.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Uncle John was a great man.  I'll always remember how kind and gentle he was.  Whenever I hear the National Anthem I always think of him and my Dad.  I am sure they are together now in Heaven.  Hopefully they get to watch the White Sox play.

What an inspiration for so many. I will remember the day I got to share some time with him and your mother a few weeks ago and thank God for that gift. Grandpa was one of the happiest guys who would make you laugh no matter what mood you were in. He knew how to make everyone feel special. I'll miss him the most around Christmas when we would decorate the house and he would tell us where to put everything. He was the greatest grandpa and I will never forget the memories made. I love you more than you love me.

Grandpa was one of the happiest guys I knew. Every time I walked into his house or a family party and saw his smiling face it would just make me smile. He taught me that you can't take things to seriously and showed me how much he loved his family. I will miss his goofy comments, his "hang loose" attitude and his own made up language. Things will not be the same with him not with us but I know he is with family above watching over us!  Love you crappa!!!

What can I possibly say about Dad that everyone doesn't already know?  Just three things come to mind.  He was a great husband to his wife.  He was a great father to all of his children and grandchildren.  He was just a great man, and will be missed by everyone he touched.  I never had any bad words to say to him,or about him in almost 35 years that I have known him.  It looks as if that streak will continue on forever.

How sad we all are losing our Dad, but how lucky we were he was our Dad.  I will miss him each and every day.  Thinking of him often always with a smile.  There is a hole in my heart no one can fill.  I will miss our talks over a cup of tea in the afternoon, and seeing the world thru his eyes.  He had a strong faith in God, which he has passed onto me.  I know I will see him someday again but until than I will ask him to watch over us all from Heaven.

Gramps.... I am going to miss the x-mas stories, the warm smiles hello, and the kind waves good bye.  I want to thank you and grandma for setting such a wonderful example on what the definition of family should be..... I am very lucky to have become a part of it.  You will be greatly missed. Grandpa, although you said you could only hear with one ear, you could see me with both eyes and I will miss seeing you. In Wisconsin, watching you try and put everything and anything you could find into a small cereal bowl, or when I woke up after you, you would respond with a "Good Afternoon". Grandpa was one of a kind.  He was loving and caring.  He always made people laugh.  I will miss going over there and seeing him in the window. Dear Mom Lahey and Family,
"Our Father who art in Heaven" is now a prayer that you will pray and always think of your Dad.  I know this because it is true.  Your Dad has had his seat next to the Lord for a very long time.  He had faith when everybody else looses their faith.  John Lahey was great example of living a life of Christianity. He will be missed. It is still hard to believe that you are gone Grandpa. Not only were you a hero to our beloved country, you were also a hero to your entire family. Grandpa was always there for us. The sacrifices he made for his loved ones are unforgettable. I will miss him dearly. I will always remember him telling me and a few of my cousins we have "wooden ears."

John Lahey was my Crappa. He always had a smile on his face and was a jokester! He was sarcastic and rarely serious. He was always the one to jerk a knot in my tail. He was all about family and it didn't matter who you were, he welcomed you in. You were my hero, a World War II vet, a Purple Heart recipient, a father, the only grandpa I had, my trouble maker, my Crappa. Rest in peace Crappa I will miss you very much!!

Grandpa was one of the bravest men I know. He always had a smile on his face and was always ready for a hug or a kiss. Grandpa always made me laugh and  I loved listening to his stories. I will miss him so much! I love you Grandpa more than you will ever love me!

I love my Grandpa John!  I loved when he took me for rides in his wheelchair.  I will miss him and his cookies.

From the time that I first started coming up with Kristie, I was instantly welcomed into your home, and subsequently, your family.  You and Grandpa have created a wonderful foundation for a great family that I consider my own.  I no longer have any grandparents left, so you and John helped fill that void, and you will continue to do so.  I look forward to my future children getting to know you, and John's memory.

Grandpa John, I love when you would say to me "bibbity bop bop bop!" I love you!

I love my Grandpa John.  He was funny!  He chased me with his scooter, played Stack the States with me and told me about the time when he was in the war.  I will miss him a lot!
