A lifelong resident of the West Lawn neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest side, Thomas was a proud Irish Catholic. He was a dedicated member of the community and attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine Grammar School and De La Salle High School.
As a young man, Thomas was a talented athlete. He was the quarterback of his high school football team, demonstrating leadership on and off the field. Recruited to play football for Notre Dame, his favorite team, Thomas made the selfless decision to forgo the opportunity and instead enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably from July 1961 to June 1967, and demonstrating a deep love and commitment to his country.
His love for sports continued throughout his life, as he became an avid bowler and golfer, spending many hours enjoying these hobbies with friends and family.
Thomas was the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. Wallow; cherished son of the late Dorothy (Tiny) and Maurice (Moe) Wallow; loving stepfather to Joseph Lenart, Richard (MaryEllen) Lenart, and the late Laura Marie Lenart; proud grandfather of Amanda (Nathan) Muhs, April Lenart, Leanne (Pete) Bernal, and Anthony (Kelly) Sabella, CPD; and a devoted great-grandfather of six. Thomas was also a dear brother to the late Carol (Robert) Rahn and William (Joanne) Wallow, and a beloved uncle to many.
A visitation to honor Thomas’s life will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 11:00am to 3:00pm at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home, 11333 South Central Avenue, Oak Lawn, IL 60453. A burial service will follow at 3:00pm at Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery, located at the same address.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Thomas’s memory to Tunnel to Towers, a charity dedicated honoring first responders and veterans who have been injured or killed in the line of duty. T2T provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building specially-adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.
