Hal loved to bowl, duck hunt and fish, taking many trips with his buddy, Phil. He was always busy working on never ending home improvement projects and coming up with new activities for his kids. He would build an ice rink and flood the back yard each winter for the kids to skate and play hockey. He was a great bicycle mechanic and also set up an above ground pool in the back yard. Hal and Joan would load all the kids in the family station wagon each summer to enjoy their vacations at the Bell family home in Grand Beach, Michigan.
