Arlyne K. Liebeskind

Arlyne Katcher Liebeskind, age 84, of Tinton Falls grew up in the city of Newark and graduated from Weequaic High School in the Class of 1953. She was devoted to her husband of 63 years, Kal, and her two daughters, Susan Sarafan and Robin Liebeskind, as well as to her grandchildren, Gregory and Adam Sarafan and Mallory Liebeskind-Vaisman. She also leaves many nieces and nephews that she loved. She was predeceased by her parents, Dora and Carl Katcher, and her siblings, Jerry Katcher, Florence Greenstein, and Sandra Haber, and her granddaughter, Mallory Liebeskind-Vaisman.

Arlyne K. Liebeskind, Ed.D. was a teacher at Bradley Beach School for over 25 years. She taught 7th and 8th graders in American History. The 8th grade graduation plays, which she wrote and directed each year, were presented with great pride by the students. Also, she initiated the first Gifted and Talented Program in Bradley. She also served as Head Teacher for many years and, during her tenure, received the "Teacher of the Year Award" for outstanding service to the district. A former student nominated her and she was listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Dr. Liebeskind received her bachelor's degree from Montclair State in 1958 and her master's degree from Monmouth College in 1972. She served as president of the local teacher's union negotiating member salaries with the Bradley Beach Board of Education. From that experience she moved forward to studying public sector labor law at Rutgers University earning a doctorate degree in 1985 and becoming a Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society Inductee. Thereafter, she was known by students and staff at school as "Dr. L."

For her doctoral thesis, Dr. Liebeskind analyzed the effect of the state's new interest arbitration law on police and fire contract negotiations. Subsequently, an article she wrote on the subject was published in the Journal of Collective Negotiations in 1987. Dr. Liebeskind continued to teach and also co-founded the labor relations firm of Abramson & Liebeskind Associates. She and her partner represented police and fire units in contract negotiations and dispute resolution. During that time, she was awarded the prestigious "Silver Card" by a PBA unit that she represented.

Since her retirement in 1994, Dr. Liebeskind served as President of the Board of Trustees for The Manor at Wayside Condo Association where she lived for many years prior to moving to Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for the Ocean Township Human Services. For pleasure, Dr. Liebeskind loved to travel with her family every year, was an avid tennis player, enjoyed Mah Jongg and loved to read-­ particularly the classics and historical fiction. She enjoyed discussing books with her granddaughter, Mallory. Her grandsons, Gregory and Adam, were also a great joy to her.

A graveside service will be held at Temple Beth El Cemetery, 3351 Route 33, Neptune, New Jersey. Due to the COVID virus, there will be no meal of condolence after the service and Shiva will be observed privately.
