

Charles Lewis Bernstein born November 19th, 1934 in Bronx, New York. Passed away peacefully September 14th, 2016, age 81 in Moorestown, NJ. Predeceased by parents Leo and Stella Bernstein and wife of 52 years, Norma.
He grew up in Woodmere, New York and went to Cornell, Class of ’56, then achieved a Masters in Journalism at Columbia. He met his wife Norma in New York and they were married in 1963, moving to Monmouth County, NJ while he commuted to New York working for Lebhar-Friedman. He became Chief Editor of Nation’s Restaurant News until 1991, and co-authored several books, including “Winning the Chain Restaurant Game: Eight Key Strategies” in 1994, as well as “Great Restaurant Innovators: Profiles in Success” and “Sambo's: The Inside Story of a Restaurant Empire's Rise and Fall.”
His other great talent was tennis, becoming captain of the Cornell team, and then a lifelong player.
He was a world traveler winning awards for articles he wrote on the food service industries of China, the former Soviet Union, and Alaska, among others. And he traveled the world with his wife as well as with humanitarian organizations such as Jewish Federation for the Righteous and Share Our Strength.
He’ll be missed, and remembered by his three kids, Adam, Greg, and Georgia, along with his sister Susan, and seven grandkids.
The funeral was held at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Neptune, NJ. Sept. 16th.
