

He excelled in school at Weequahic High School in Newark and he served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a German translator following the front lines as the US invaded Normandy, and was honorably discharged in 1944. Mr. Kahn graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in Political Science (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1948. He began work at Bamberger’s stocking shoes in high school, and worked his entire career for Bamberger’s/Macy’s, retiring as vice president. He served in many roles during his career, including managing and opening many stores. He was known as demanding, but a fair and caring boss. Mr. Kahn enjoyed reading, politics, travel and exercise. He loved the sunshine and animals (especially dogs), and was a supporter of the Humane Society and the WAGS. He and his wife raised their children in Ocean Township, NJ where they lived for 42 years. The family were long time members of the former Temple Beth Torah in Ocean Township. In 2001 they moved to Westlake Community in Jackson, NJ where he kept an immaculate home, and enjoyed many friendships.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Altman Kahn, of Jackson, NJ, as well as his son Michael Kahn and his partner Stephanie Glick, of Vancouver, BC, his daughter, Lisa Kahn Frick and her husband Steve, of Orlando, FL, and his sister, Charlotte Kahn Feiertag of Bloomfield, NJ, and his grandchildren Eric Altman Frick and Rachel Ivy Frick. His extended family included Alva Altman Jacobs (sister-in-law) of Monroe Township, NJ, nephew’s, Ronald Jacobs and wife Marcia, and Richard Jacobs and his wife Teresa , and niece, Ellen Feiertag, and all of their children.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Sunday, May 15 at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapel at 2130 Highway 35, Ocean, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society. The family will be sitting Shiva at the Kahn residence after the service and on Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.
