

Murray Rubin, age 89 of West Long Branch, N.J. died on Wednesday January 28, 2026. He was a retired teacher, school counselor, and business owner. He was born in Asbury Park the son of the late Harry and Ruth Rubin. He was the brother of the late Ocean Twp. Councilman Saul Rubin who predeceased him in 1984, and for whom he flew to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California to give him a bone marrow transplant in an attempt to save his life from the effects of childhood leukemia.
He was born and raised in Asbury Park, graduating from the Bond Street School in 1951, and Asbury Park High School in 1955. He later attended and graduated from Monmouth Jr. College and in 1959 from Monmouth College (now Monmouth University). That same year, he went on to own and operate the first of three coin operated laundry’s – the Plaza Coin Laundry in Asbury Park, the Wash-O-Mat in Red Bank, and the Clean Seen in Long Branch. He and his wife Lynne, operated these stores for more than 30 years.
In 1959, he began a teaching career that was to last more than 47 years, first as a special education teacher in the Asbury Park School System and later with the Freehold Regional High School District at Freehold Boro and Marlboro High Schools, where he served first as a social studies teacher and later as a guidance counselor. While serving with the Asbury Park and Freehold Regional High School District, he went on to Newark State College (now Kean University) where he earned his K-8 elementary certification and to Seton Hall University for his Master’s Degree in Student Personal Services. He than returned to Monmouth University where he earned certification as a Director of Counseling, Principal, and Asst. Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
He retired from the Freehold Regional High School District in 2000, but not being satisfied with retirement returned to public education as a long-term substitute counselor for the Scotch-Plains Fanwood, South River, Kenilworth, Southern Regional, Monroe Twp. and most recently, the Long Branch Public Schools where he served as a counseling support consultant.
He was a member of the NJEA, the Monmouth County Education Association-serving as Professional Rights and Responsibilities Chairperson, the Freehold Regional High School Education Association- for which he served as President, Building Representative, Grievance Chairperson. He was also a member the National Association of College Admission Counselors.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Lynne Janet, a son Jody Craig Rubin his wife Marnie and their step daughter Jadin of Colchester, CT
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Friday January 30, 2026 Bloomfield Cooper Funeral Home in Ocean, NJ. Internment will be at Temple Beth El Cemetery, West Bangs Ave., Neptune, NJ immediately following services. Letters of condolence may be emailed to the family at [email protected].
