

Roy Short passed away at the age of 94 on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV, surrounded by his family. He was born March 12, 1921 at Brier Creek, Wyoming Co., WV, to Alce and Oma Green Short. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and GGdaddy. He loved spending time outdoors whether it was taking his daily walk, hunting or working in his garden. He believed everyone needed to get up and walk more! Roy began working at a young age to help his family. His career started at the Shields Lumber Company. Leaving there, he established a 40 year mining career beginning at Red Jacket Coal Mine Co. at the age of 19. Then, as a superintendent at Belva Coal Co. and eventually, retiring from Island Creek Coal Co. in 1980 as mine foreman. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Elga Jean Blankenship Short, his sister, Ora Short Cook and husband, Ralph; a brother, Charlie Short; and brothers-in-law, Earl Walls, Clarence Lester, W.C. Blankenship, King Blankenship and wife, Grace, Harry Bailey, Richard Childress, and Don Toler. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Cheryl Patrick and husband, Michael of Durham, NC and Beverly Kourey and husband, Terry of Charleston, WV; his grandson, Brandon Patrick and wife, Stacy of Roxboro, NC; his beloved great-grandsons, Cooper and Tanner Patrick; his sisters (both by birth and by marriage), Wanda Lester, Edie Walls, Mary Jo Walls and husband, Barney, Virginia Short, Eula Bailey, Helen Toler, Glenna Sue Childress and Erma Blankenship; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank those who cared for Roy so well, especially the staff at the Bowers Hospice House, the Marmet Center, Dr. Marciano Lee and staff (especially Karla), and Dr. Raghavendra Mulinti and staff. A special note of appreciation for the loving care provided by Judy, Aaron, Dorothy and Ruth which allowed him to stay home where he was the happiest and for Tony and Renee’s special care throughout the years. Roy’s sons-in-law and his friends with whom he hunted throughout the years will serve as pallbearers.
