Albert Benton Finch Jr.

Dr. Albert Benton Finch, Jr. passed away December 5, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born April 24, 1922 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Dr. Finch was accepted into the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1943. A member of the ROTC, Dr. Finch became a 2nd Lt. Commissioned in the Medical Administrative Core on Reserve. Following graduation in 1946, he accepted an obstetrics and gynecology internship at Vanderbilt.

Upon completing his internship, he reported to Eglin Field Air Force Base in Pensacola, Florida where he was promoted to Captain. After his service obligation was complete, Dr. Finch was asked to continue at Eglin Field as a civilian doctor, where he remained until 1950. From Florida, Dr. Finch went to New Orleans, where he completed his residency at Charity Hospital.

In 1952, he was recruited to Odessa by Dr. Rainer. Dr. Finch opened the Women’s and Children’s Clinic in 1957. He asked Dr. Charles Stephens and Dr. William Brantley to join him at the Clinic as Odessa and his practice grew. Both physicians opened their own offices and Dr. Norman Harris joined Women’s and Children’s working with Dr. Finch for over 20 years. Eyster Anderson was the lab technician for 50 years. Dr. Finch retired after 54 years at Women’s and Children’s.

Dr. Finch led a team of 13 physicians in building Women’s and Children’s Hospital in 1975. It is now known at Odessa Regional Medical Center. The Dr. Albert B. Finch Medical Office Building was dedicated to Dr. Finch in 2008 and it is attached to ORMC.

Dr. Finch was preceded in death by his first wife of 64 years, Jane Finch. He is survived by his wife, Sally Finch, four daughters, Ann (Paul) Cravens, Beth (Max) Ford, Gail (Jim) Deats and Kim (Stan) Harrison, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
