On January 3, 1910, Curtis was delivered by a doctor in a click-clacking horse drawn buggy on a routine house call in Aspermont, Texas.
Winn, 100, died July 2, 2010, at his home where he wanted to be. Many older residents remember him as the Ector County Tax Assessor Collector for 22 years, retiring in 1983. The Odessa Optimist Club had recently honored him with 54 years of perfect attendance where he had served in many positions throughout the years. Going to Optimist Club every Friday was always one of the highlights of his week. He was instrumental in promoting the recruitment of women, which wasn’t allowed until some time after the 70’s. He was truly an “optimist” about life. Curtis was also a member of the local Masonic Lodge for many years.
His family had celebrated his 100th birthday with a big party in January with most of his extended family and many friends present. In an article recognizing his 100th birthday, he was quoted about his happiest moment in life, getting married to Sue. “I got married to a beautiful woman in 1930, on Sept. 5th during the Depression.” His saddest moment was losing her in 1994 after 64 years of marriage.
The family will receive visitors Monday, July 5th, from 6 to 8 pm at Frank Wilson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church where he was a faithful member for over 50 years on Tuesday, July 6th, at 11am. Internment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Odessa, TX beside his beloved wife, Sue.
Curtis was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sue, and an infant daughter. He is survived by his daughters Betty Bonds of Colonial Heights, VA. and Barbara (Bobbie) Talley and husband Ray of Shep, TX.
