Edwin Guilbeau

Edwin (Eddie) Guilbeau was called home on May 20, 2018 after a brief illness. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Lottie Guilbeau, brother Chuck Guilbeau and sister Lottie Mae Wheat, his wife of 43 years Evelyn Stecker Guilbeau and wife of 16 years Avery Schuepbach.

Eddie was born in Port Arthur Texas where he loved boxing, played football, and baseball through High School. Eddie loved to fish and hunt. Eddie served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942-1945. In 1948 he moved to Odessa where he joined the First Methodist Church. Eddie served on the board of his church for over 30 years and served as an usher for 58 years. Eddie was a lifelong member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and attended the Spice of Life Group for many years. Eddie worked for Humble Oil where he retired after 38 years.

One of Eddie’s great joys in life was his dedication to young people. In 1949, he was appointed Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 72 and in 1951 he became Scoutmaster and attended several National Boy Scout Jamborees. He was also named Honorary Coach for Bonham Jr. High football team for 1998-2000 during the time his grandson played for Bonham football. His love for children extended throughout his life with his generosity to many organizations such as St. Jude’s, Shriner’s Texas Scottish Rite, Texas Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network. His support went on to include Boy’s Town, Cal Farley’s, Methodist Children’s Home, Omaha Home for Boys and Covenant House of Houston. Eddie even received a call from Marlo Thomas thanking him for his many contributions. His important contributions will live on in the hearts of many children who benefited from his help. Other local charities that were close to Eddie’s heart were Meals on Wheels, Parks Methodist Retirement Village, Salvation Army and Hospice and the Door Hope Mission. Eddie holds a special place in the hearts of those blessed enough to know him and he will be sorely missed.

Eddie loved raising miniature horses and won 1st place honors 2 years in a row. He loved being a Mason was one for over 70 years. In 2009 Eddie was the recipient of the Golden Trowel Award.

Eddie was survived by his Niece Lottie Kate Mimick and son James Randell of Dallas, his Nephew Ray Guilbeau, wife Karen and children Landon and Sydney of California. Daughter in law Sherry Schuepbach of Odessa, Grandson Matthew Schuepbach and wife Melissa of Abilene and great granddaughter Kenna. Thank you Sandy Stillwell and Ray and Danna Moseley for being his special friends over the years.

Visitation for the family will be Thursday evening from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home. Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 at First United Methodist Church in Odessa with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to a charity of your choice. Hubbard-Kelly is in charge of the arrangements.
