Floyd Virgil Hughes 75 of Gardendale, Texas lost his fight with cancer on December 27, 2022, at his home in Gardendale, Texas surrounded by his family and friends. Floyd was born October 25, 1947, in Pecos, Texas where he grew up. He was born to Marvin Virgil Hughes and Ellen Zerelda Kelly.
Celebration of Floyd Virgil Hughes will be on January 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Stonegate Fellowship Church, Pastor Kyle Rodgers. 4240 Preston Smith Road, Odessa, Texas. The Family will be hosting a gathering starting at 4:00 p.m. at Floyd and Barbara’s home in Gardendale, Texas.
Floyd is survived by:
Sons: Gene Hughes and wife Jeanna of Tuttle, Oklahoma, Brian Hughes and wife Virginia of Odessa, Texas. Daughter at Heart and caretaker till the end, Shannon Teague and husband John of Odessa, Texas. Brother: Val Call and wife Tina of Dell City, Texas; Sisters: Gloria Wolslegel and husband Alan of Rochester, WA, Shari Slape and husband Joty of Odessa, Texas. Nephews: Jason Sutton and wife Miranda, Jamie Merrell and wife Debbie, Brandon Wolslegel and wife Jennifer, Dr. Colin Wolslegel and Even Wolslegel, 9 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grand Children, 2 Great-Great Grandsons. 2 Daughter-in-laws, Candy Hughes of Oklahoma City Oklahoma and Tina Gee of Blossom, Texas. First wife and mother of his two sons, Judy Bruno of Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Floyd was preceded in death by: Wife Barbara Hughes, Son: Stephen Hughes, Daughter: Darcy Babcock, Nephew: Travis Call and Grandson: Dustin Teague.
Floyd married Barbara Ann McCormack on April 25, 1974, in Odessa, Texas. They had forty-seven glorious years together until Barbara’s passing in August of 2021. Floyd and Barbara raised his two boys from his first marriage together and Floyd was especially proud of both his boys. Floyd bought his first Hot Shot truck in 1973 and leased on with Shorty Hall Rig Company for years before incorporating Hughes Oilfield Transportation in May of 2000. Floyd loved to tell stories, jokes, and draw on every piece of paper he could find in front of him. Floyd drew the original logo for his company and was one of the best fabricators around. He could show and tell you how things would and should work. Floyd was immensely proud to say he was a Mason and being a member of the Odessa Lodge #1385. He loved a good party and especially loved to dance. He just recently danced at his own 75th Birthday party with his family and friends.
Floyd loved to tinker on old cars, acquiring a respectable collection of his own over the years. He loved to take his cars to car shows where he won many trophies. He loved to hit the open road on his Harley and take long rides. He was a very caring, honest, loveable, and stern man, and loved to give gifts to his office staff from his travels over the years from every place he would visit. Floyd was always there when someone was in need.
Floyd was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. After retiring in 2015, he enjoyed traveling to car and boat races, and attending auctions in Dallas and Oklahoma City.
