Homer Dan Clemons

a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Dan was born in Coryell County, Texas on March 13, 1929, the fourth of five children to Alvie B. Clemons and Ruby Hazel Schley Clemons. As a young man Dan lived in Gatesville, Texas, where he helped his family carry 22 wagonloads of rock to build the Clemons family rock house and barn. Dan attended school in Gatesville, Texas, and later Mission High School in San Francisco, California.

Dan served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded two Bronze Stars. After serving in the military, Dan returned to Texas. On June 6, 1953, he married Fayetta Jean Armstrong in Odessa. He worked in the West Texas oil fields for over 35 years, for Forest Oil Company and Sun Oil Company, living in Grandfalls, Monahans, and Odessa. After retirement, Dan and Jean owned and operated D & J Electric on East Yukon Road in Odessa. They were happily married for 48 years until Jean preceded Dan in death in 2001.

Throughout his life, Dan enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with family members and being outside working in his shop, hunting, fishing, and spending time at his place on Brownwood Lake.

Dan began a new chapter in his life when he married Mona Stull Davenport on March 3, 2003. A year later they went on a grand adventure, an RV trip to Alaska. Back in Odessa, Dan became a dedicated member of the Northside Baptist Church and the Odessa Downtown Lion’s Club. As a Lion, Dan helped raise money for the Texas Lion’s Camp in Kerrville, Texas. He assisted with rose sales and worked many hours at the concession stand at Ratliff Stadium.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents Alvie and Hazel Clemons, his wife Jean Armstrong Clemons, sister and brother-in-law Blanche and Albert Yeilding, brother and sister-in-law James and Florence Clemons, brother and sister-in-law Samuel Clemons and Josephine Clary, and sister Gwendolyn (Suzy) Dodson.

He is survived by his wife, Mona Davenport Clemons. Dan’s other survivors are sister-in-law Marjorie Armstrong Bradley of Woodward, Oklahoma, son Glen and wife Silvia Clemons of Lubbock, daughter and husband Regina and Jeffrey Barnes of Denton, grandchildren Jennie Clemons of Austin, Michael Clemons of Round Rock, Andrea Clemons of Hutto, great grandson Zac Clemons, step children Karen Davenport Duerkson of Iowa Park, Anita and Douglas Day of Leander, step grandchildren Rob Duerksen of Euless, Angela Duerkson of Iowa Park, Chad and Momo Day of Taipei, Taiwan, Callie and Jason Murray of Round Rock, Joubal Vernaza of Lubbock, Romina Vernaza of Lubbock, and step great granddaughters Preslie Murray, Finley Murray, and Camilla Day, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 23, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home at 601 N. Alleghaney in Odessa. A memorial service will be held in Odessa 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Clydel Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Madison Cemetery in Beaver County, Oklahoma, following a service at Fairview United Methodist Church near Slapout, Oklahoma on Friday, August 25, at 10:30 a.m.
