James Sidney Braddock, Jr. of Odessa finished his race and was escorted home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 14, 2011. James was born on March 18, 1943, in Borger, Texas, to Sidney and Juanita Braddock. He was a devout Christian and his commitment to God shaped and determined all his life’s decisions.
James grew up in Odessa, making countless friends along the way. He married his high school friend and college sweetheart, Callie Lewis, on August 2, 1963, and together they shared and modeled a committed, loving marriage for over 47 years.
Mr. Braddock fashioned his passion for fine men’s clothing into a long and successful career. For many years during the 1970’s and 1980’s, he and his family operated one of this area’s finest men’s stores, appropriately bearing his name. True to his nature, it was during this time that he decreed upon himself the title of “James Braddock, Jr., P.H.T. (Poor Humble Tailor)”. This “title” remained even as he moved on from his retail store to dedicate his talent solely to providing his customers with some of the world’s very best made-to-measure clothing. The finest clothing and the most genuine service were his trademarks.
James had an amazing singing talent and a beautiful tenor voice. For many years, he used that God-given ability to serve as a worship leader at the Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ. His incredible voice was a constant blessing to friends and family throughout his life. He had a diligent study of the scriptures and served for many years as a teacher in bible classes. He was also well known for his one-of-a-kind wit and ability to bring laughter and a warm smile at any moment. And, although there were several periods of serious illness throughout his life, this characteristic of spreading joy never waivered, even in the most difficult times.
His greatest source of pride and joy in life was, unquestionably, his family. As dad/Pop, he lead his family his entire life, and he leaves a firmly established legacy of faith in the lives of his wife, his children and their families. James was preceded in death by his parents and by one unborn child. He leaves behind, temporarily, his wife, Callie; two sons: Scott Braddock and his wife, Christy, of Allen, Texas; Sid Braddock and his wife, Krista, of Odessa; one daughter, Shelli Presley and her husband, Erik, of Abilene, Texas; one sister, Linda O’Connor and her husband, Chuck, of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren: Ashle’ Robinson, Kaitlyn and Konner Braddock and the Presley boys…Jeremiah, Zeik, Isaac and Nate; Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law, Coy and Jerri Nelson of Duncanville, Texas; and many very special nieces, nephews and extended family members.
James’s family wishes to especially thank the host of friends, co-workers, family and prayer warriors the world over who have vigilantly blessed and supported us in every need. Certainly, no words can ever express our love, appreciation and thanks to our “angels on earth”, Maria Flores and Tammy Crouch, for their daily, loving attention and care for James and Callie.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, February 16th, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Braddock’s celebration service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 17 at New Life Church, 7184 Club Drive, Odessa, Texas 79765. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland Texas.
Service arrangements for Mr. Braddock have been entrusted to Frank W. Wilson
