Joanne McCafferty

JoAnne is survived by her son Terry McCafferty and wife Barbara of Brookshire, Tx; daughter Karen Burney of Odessa, Tx; grandchildren, Jason and Tina McCafferty of Dallas, Tx; Jack and Amber Littler of Richmond, Tx; Brian and April Burney of Odessa, Tx; Bryan and Lisa Chamness of Richardson, Tx; and her brother Gene “Corky” Skaggs and wife Mary of Amarillo, Tx. She also leaves behind five great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

JoAnne is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest McCafferty, son-in-law Bill Burney, great grandson Bastion Cole Burney, brothers Jud Skaggs and Hunter Skaggs; and sisters Leta Hartsell, Mary Adair and Barbara Haning.

JoAnne was born on December 22, 1921 in Panhandle, Tx to Lonnie and Anna Skaggs. She graduated from Panhandle High School. JoAnne married Ernest McCafferty on August 16, 1941. JoAnne moved with her young family to Odessa, Tx in 1953. She was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in jr. high at which time she began her career as the Pastor’s Secretary and administrative assistant at Sherwood Baptist Church. After 29 years of service she retired on July 1, 1990. JoAnne then worked as the bookkeeper at Sherwood Christian Academy for 21 years before retiring at the age of 90.

JoAnne loved her church. She taught three yr. old Sunday School for many years, sang in the choir, and served as special event coordinator. JoAnne’s faith in the Lord has been a strength to her and those who knew her throughout her life.

The celebration of JoAnne’s life is scheduled for 1:00 pm, Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017, at Belmont Baptist Church, with a graveside service to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services will be officiated by Dr. Byron McWilliams and Pastor John McLemore. Family Visitation will be held at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The family would especially like to thank Rhonda, RN and other staff at Star Hospice and Crossland Care for their compassionate help during this past year.
